Registrar Jim Khan scrubs up before performing a Laparoscopic Anterior Resection on a patient at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, Hampshire. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Picture date: Friday January 12, 2007. A recent survey from NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) concluded that laparoscopic surgery is clinically the best for patients and is also the most cost effective way of working. There is a national shortage of the highly trained surgeons needed for this kind of procedure but Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust has two consultants who have been providing laparoscopic surgery for four years with excellent results. Andrew Miles is a colorectal surgeon at the Trust and has recently been asked by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons to teach doctors at other Trusts about their procedures.
