Even though my birthday was two weeks ago, I am still celebrating that special day. This time Nancy and Stewart took me out for breakfast and what a wonderful experience we all had. We went to the “Olympic Café” on the corner of University and Texas Street. There is a nice size parking lot; easy access, particularly from Texas street, and a delightful restaurant.
We were met by “Rose” and she told us we could sit anywhere we wished. When we arrived there about 9:00am we were the only ones in the restaurant, but people kept coming in and eating while we were there.
The “Olympic Café” is a Greek restaurant, and although there were “standard” items on the menu, we all elected to have Greek style breakfast’s. Nancy had the “breakfast Gyros, ($5.95) which consisted of 2 large eggs scrambled with sliced Gyros – and a lot of it – and grill onion. It was topped with fresh tomato and wrapped in hot pita bread. All of our entree’s were served with tzatziki sauce.
Stewart had the house specialty –($6.75) Spinach and Feta that was served with hash brown potatoes and I had the Vegetarian Breakfast Pita ($5.95) which was 2 large scrambled eggs, mushrooms, green pepper and onion. I elected not to have the feta cheese as it is not one of my favorite cheeses.
My first thought was that the chickens that laid the eggs must have been gigantic, because all of our meals were huge. They were also terrific. The Gyros were tender and tasty; the pita was fresh and hot; the spinach omelet was so large that Stewart took a third of it home. My omelet was succulent and the mushrooms were delightful.
The coffee was good and plentiful and Rose kept the cups filled even before it was realized there was room for more. She also kept the water glasses filled.
Interesting enough, in talking to Rose we found out that she had been there for almost 20 years; her sister has worked there for 30 years. The chef was there when the restaurant opened up. She was pleasant to everyone; and very, very efficient.
Although we ordered from the breakfast menu – which filled the entire 8 ½” x 11” page, the “Lunch and Dinner” menu leaves nothing to be desired. There are daily specials; Greek combinations; favorites; Greek Specialties; etc. There are just too many items to list here.
They also had some very interesting desserts on display on the front counter. I took a picture of one of them for you to marvel at. (I know – don’t end a sentence with a preposition!)
There is no question in our minds as to why the “Olympic Café” has won the “Best Greek Restaurant” award. It is very deserving of the title. I am sure that you will enjoy any of the meals you have here. They open at 7:00am and close at 9:00pm. καλή όρεξη
