“That was one weird trip, my eagle friend,” said Tony as he sat down across from me. We had agreed to meet in the quad at school during lunch on Thursday to talk about what happened on the mountain trip. I had wanted to talk with him sooner, but with classes, homework, him working at the store, and all our energy practice, it was tough to find time to get together. It was probably better that we had to wait a few days anyway, to let it all sink in.
“It was weird, all right,” I answered, “but weird good. It was magical. Better than Disneyland.”
“Yeah, it definitely was magical. You know, I had my doubts about whether any of the stuff Don Emilio was telling us was going to be of any use. I thought it might be a waste of time, but at least it was getting my family off my back for a little while. My biggest concern was what weird brujo stuff he was gonna dump on us. And just when I was thinking it wasn’t too strange after all, we do the mountain trip and find out about the secret world of trees and plants and butterflies. We’re talking to trees and they’re talking back. Then, using x-ray vision, we see a tree’s life force flowing. And on top of it all, you call your eagle friends over to fly with you.”
We both laughed at first, then shook our heads in wonder, as neither of us could ever have dreamed up what happened on that trip.
“You know of course,” I said, “no one will believe any of this when we tell them.”
“Well, I’ve been thinking about that. Maybe we just tell what they might believe, like if we told someone about the auras of the trees. They might not believe us at first, but we could show them how to do it.”
“Okay, then what? Show them how to talk to a tree?” We both laughed again.
“No way,” said Tony as he bit into his roast beef sandwich. “Too weird.”
I opened up my bag and pulled out the tuna sandwich. “We don’t have to tell anyone right now. We still have more things to learn from Don Emilio, and we can talk to him about this. Maybe right now the point is to figure out what this means for us—what did we learn, and how can we use it. And for now, perhaps we put this stuff on that list of things we want to share with the guys after we have finished these sessions with Don Emilio.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Tony took another bite of his sandwich as we both tried to finish our lunch before we ran out time. But even in the silence it was clear neither of us could stop thinking about those magical moments.
“That was really something,” Tony said finally, “looking into that tree branch like we had x-ray vision. Like superman.”
“We can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound,” I added, “but you and I saw inside that tree! That was real!”
“And called eagles to come and play,” Tony added.
I sat there in silence, except for the sound of me finishing my sandwich, replaying over and over in my head the almost unbelievable events of that day in the mountains. I looked at Tony, but he was staring right past me, zoned out like he was also looking back at those events in his mind rather than seeing what was in front of his eyes.
The next few weeks passed so quickly I didn’t have enough time to practice everything I wanted to. Not that I spent all that much time working on them. I guess I needed to get into a habit of doing them, and not stop before I was finished. But Don Emilio had said not to beat ourselves up about it, and just do the best we could. So that’s what I did. But I was anxious to have another session with him to see what was next. This stuff he was teaching and showing us was getting to be so amazingly great.
When the day finally came for our next session, we met at Tony’s house before heading over.
“Hey, have you tried to see any auras?” I asked, as we walked out of his yard. I was curious how he was doing with the new exercises, or if he was even practicing any of it yet.
Tony looked at me, surprised that I asked. “Man, auras and all that other stuff? I haven’t even thought about doing those yet. Have you been practicing any of that?”
“No,” I answered, “not with everything else we have to practice. I guess I could start doing the walking meditation, and maybe even looking at auras.”
“But talking to trees, and looking inside! Man, that’s just so weird it scares me,” said Tony.
“Scares the part of you that doesn’t want to believe this stuff is real.” I remembered he had erased it from his sight because he couldn’t believe what he saw.
“Yeah, I know. I guess I’m slipping back to that place of being comfortable with what I’ve always known, rather than moving on and reminding myself that we know what we saw, and we know we can see with x-ray vision into the tree, and we know we can talk with trees and plants.”
“If our energy is up,” I added, “and we are in … what did Don Emilio call it?”
“A state of heightened awareness.”
We turned at the alley and walked toward Nana and Tata’s yard. I mentioned that lately I had been keeping my energy up, and as a result, I was becoming more aware of my intuition and getting messages.
“Oh yeah? What kind of messages?”
“Oh, I’m sorta reading minds,” I said nonchalantly as we walked into the yard. “Let me see.” I put my hand to my head. “I think Nana wants to fix me a burrito.”
“Yeah, right. Mind reading,” Tony said laughing. “That’s wishing and hoping. I’m hoping she has one for me, too!”
Don Emilio came out of the house as we walked up to the back door.
“Hola mijos.” How are you two doing today?”
“Oh, fine,” I said.
“Fine, my eye. I just got very hungry hearing Vincent talk about his Nana’s burritos.”
When it really came down to it, what Tony and I both liked best for lunch or a snack was my Nana’s bean burritos. She had made a big pot of beans the day before, so I knew there was a good possibility we could get a burrito. I looked at Don Emilio, then into the house toward the kitchen, then back at Don Emilio. “Do we have time?”
“Yes, yes,” he responded, “go ahead. Your Nana has some food waiting for you. She has a way of knowing when you are going to be coming around looking for food.”
“Siempre busca por comida,” Nana said to Don Emilio from the kitchen doorway. “Todo el día tiene hambre, y siempre está comiendo, pero no sé a donde se pone la comida. Mira no más, qué flaco.”
She insisted to anyone who would listen, that I was too skinny. That’s why she kept pushing food my way, which was just fine with me. I just loved to eat Nana’s food.
“Hijos, vengan aquí para comer,” she said motioning for us to come inside and eat.
“I just ate,” Don Emilio said to us as we walked into the house. “You boys take your time. Remember, a prayer before meals, and then think about what you are doing, what is going on, as you chew. Come out when you have finished.”
We said a silent prayer before digging into our big, delicious burritos of mashed beans with melted jack cheese and a little red chile sauce. I quickly gulped mine down, as did Tony. Nana wanted to feed us more, but didn’t want to keep us from Don Emilio, so she wrapped a second burrito for each of us in paper towels and sent us outside.
“Don Emilio,” I said as I sat down in the garden shed, “Tony and I were talking about the mountain trip. That was one heck of an amazing experience.” I unwrapped the burrito and took a big bite, looking at Don Emilio.
“I agree, it was very amazing,” Don Emilio answered smiling, probably not surprised that we got out of the house with a second burrito. “I was very pleased with what you both were able to do that day. Your energy vibration was so high, you were both in a state of heightened awareness much of the day. What you experienced was certainly extra ordinary, way beyond what you can usually perceive. I am sure it left you somewhat unsettled and unsure of what you experienced. But I assure you it was all very real.
“Yeah, unsettled may be a better word,” said Tony, also chewing on his burrito. “I was thinking fear. I think I’m afraid to try looking into a tree again, or trying to talk to one. So I haven’t practiced that yet.”
“I did not assign that as an exercise because you first need to be in a high energy, high vibration state. Let us leave that for the advanced level, and for now practice what your small self, your ego, can experience without being fearful of what it does not understand. I could say do not fear, just trust your Higher Self. But the mind does not give up control so easily. It tries to protect you by sending up a red flag, a warning, which you perceive as a sense of fear. So we need to approach such experiences differently, under conditions of high energy vibration, where the self experiences these out of the ordinary events in a safe environment and with less of a shock to the mind.”
“Okay, so we won’t be doing that again anytime soon,” said Tony. “Anyway, how does seeing into trees or talking with them help us?”
“Or flying with eagles?” I added.
Don Emilio got up from his chair and stood in front of the worktable. He clasped his hands in front of him, almost as if he was going to pray.
“Mijos, this is really important,” he said, looking at us intently. “Those experiences showed you that the limits you have placed on what you think you can do, are no longer valid. You can do much more than you ever dreamed possible. But not while stuck with what the mind thinks is possible. On the mountain you were able to quiet the mind to some extent, and entered a state of heightened awareness. In that state you saw the aura, or the energy, emanating from living beings. You saw inside a tree and saw its life force flowing. You heard the thoughts of plants and animals, and understood the complex web of life and the energy connections among them. In your previous vision experience, Vicente, you even saw the lines of energy connecting you with all things. Then, at the top of the mountain, you sent those same lines of energy out to your eagle friends, and joined them in flight. You both sent lines of energy out from your heart area, and were able to connect with the web of energy, the Force, that connects those beings there on the mountain.
“That web of energy exists not just on the mountain among those plants and animals. It exists everywhere, all around you. Just as you sent out your energy to connect with those plants and animals, you can connect with anything and anyone, right here. Our previous sessions and your exercises prepared you to know energy and move it, to stop energy leaks and increase your energy, and to send it out to connect with others. By moving into a state of heightened awareness and directing your energy out into that web of energy connections, you have the power for more than just seeing into a tree or flying with eagles. You have the power to create whatever you desire. Let me say that again. Using the techniques I am sharing with you, you can create whatever you desire and focus on––anything you want to have, to do, or to become.”
“I’m all for that,” I said, with a certain amount of doubt. It sounded almost too good to be true that we could create whatever we wanted. But with all the amazing stuff we’d seen and done with Don Emilio, I figured I might as well keep on believing.
“I don’t know,” said Tony. “If I told any friends or family members what you just said, they’d say I was crazy. But it’s been crazy good so far, and it feels like we’re getting closer. So now what?”
“Now we will go right into the topic for today,” said Don Emilio, “which is creating what we think about. We discussed this topic briefly before, and now we will go into it more deeply.”
“Great,” said Tony, “I’ve been wanting to get back to that. As I remember, you said that this Force responds to where we focus our attention, and makes things happen to create what we think about. So how do we do it? How do we use this Force to get what we want?”
“Well, let me begin by restating a few basic points.” Don Emilio moved back and leaned against the worktable. “One, everything is alive and has consciousness. Two, everything is made of energy, and on an energetic level is actually a ball of luminous energy fibers. Three, everything is connected by these thin luminous fibers of energy. Four, there is a massive, living, thinking web of energy permeating the universe. This energy, which some call the Force, and others call Intent, responds to the focus of our attention and makes things happen that match our thoughts. The luminous fibers are key. They connect us to everything, including our thoughts, which are alive and have their own consciousness. These thoughts do not have a physical mass that we can see, but they are alive. They are energy, and they exist within our energy field, our ball of luminous fibers. Are you following me so far?”
We both nodded.
“Let us use the example we used before: the thought of wanting a better job. Even before the thought of a better job was completely formed, you began to build up more and more emotional energy about wanting more than a job working in the store. Eventually the thought that evolved in your head was you wanted a job teaching karate.
“What happened on the energy level was that the idea became fully formed and popped out of your enegy field as a separate thought bubble, still connected to you. A large amount of energy then traveled through the luminous fibers to that thought bubble. This living entity, your thought bubble, became more refined as you imagined yourself teaching karate, and it grew stronger and stronger as more energy was sent to it. When this thought bubble had accumulated a sufficient amount of energy, your Higher Self took over and, using its infinitely numerous lines of energy fibers, sent that thought-energy out into the Force, broadcasting the information about your desire.
“As a result, the karate instructor got an inspiration to hire someone part time to help with the younger kids. When they posted the job notice, you responded to an urge to go to the youth center. While there you saw the notice. You applied and, since you had the required training, you were hired.”
“So what seem to be coincidences can be the result of messages being sent out and responded to?” I asked.
“Yes, information coded into the energy in the Force gets broadcast to those who need to receive it,” Don Emilio answered. “This is a simplified version of the process. You start by defining what you want, and you focus your attention on it, thereby sending it energy. Then you maintain a strong and enthusiastic belief that it is on its way to you. Intent, this Force, then in some mysterious way, arranges for all the players to somehow come together in a magical dance, responding to the song that you broadcast over the energy waves. The clearer your desire and more energy sent to the thought, the greater the possibility that clear communications will be received by those who need to hear it.
“How many times can we do this sort of thing, like make a job happen?” asked Tony. “How many times can we create something we want?”
Don Emilio moved away from the worktable, stepped over to his chair and sat down in front of us. He looked directly at both of us, making sure that we were paying close attention.
“Again, this is really important,” he said. “This process I have been talking about, this creation process, is how we make anything and everything that happens in our lives. Whether consciously, or unconsciously by default, everything in our lives has been brought to us through this process. I used the example of wanting to teach karate, but it could be anything. The higher your energy level and the clearer your desire, the better your connection will be with your Higher Self and with the Force, and therefore the more successful you can be in creating the world you want. Or perhaps more correctly, co-creating your world along with your Higher Self, the Force, and all the connected entities, physical and non-physical, who play a part.
“Your personal energy levels have a great deal to do with how quickly you manifest your desires. Self-doubt and not trusting your ability to create are linked to low levels of energy. If your energy level is constantly at a low level, you cannot transmit much energy to the thought bubble, and likewise, there will be less energy behind the effort to send the thought out into the Force. If you consciously or unconsciously choose to remain at low levels of energy, you are, by default, choosing for things to remain the same.”
“Oh, now I understand why we’ve focused so much on increasing our energy,” said Tony.
“So now tell me how you deplete your energy,” said Don Emilio.
“By not meditating,” I answered, “and not giving thanks for our food, and….”
“Okay, good,” said Don Emilio interrupting. “You remember what we talked about. But I mentioned those more as ways to increase your energy, to help keep it up. It is not necessarily true that if you do not do those things, you will deplete your energy. I want to talk about how you actually cause a loss of energy. What things do people do to lose energy? How do they go from a high energy state, feeling connected to God, with everything going their way, to a low-energy state where everything seems to go wrong?”
“Getting into a fight.” said Tony.
“Or even just getting angry at someone,” I added.
“Doing something that gets my parents angry at me is another downer,” said Tony.
“I think being jealous or resentful about something would cause a loss of energy,” I said.
“Thinking about something that makes me sad can make me lose energy,” said Tony.
There was a pause as we both thought what else to say.
“Oh, I know,” I added. “Being angry about having to do yard work makes me lose energy.”
“I get down about having to work extra time at the store when I want to be somewhere else. And another downer would be if I ask a girl out and get turned down.”
“Uh … Tony,” I said grinning and turning to look directly at him.
“Okay, okay. I think that if I ever asked someone out, getting turned down might bum me out. That better?” he asked, smiling back at me. We both laughed. “But, hey, you should know about that, Vincent. Didn’t you want to go to the Homecoming Dance with Gloria?”
“Um, well, yeah. Talk about getting bummed out and depleting my energy.”
“What happened?” asked Don Emilio.
I really didn’t want to bring this up with Don Emilio. This was a bad result from taking these lessons with him. I didn’t want him to feel bad about something like this happening to me. But since Tony brought it up, I had to tell him.
“Well, I’ve been talking with this friend, Gloria, who is in a number of our classes. We’ve known her since grade school. I walk home from school with her occasionally, and sometimes we eat lunch together. And once in a while we even talk on the phone.”
“He’s beating around the bush,” said Tony. “He likes her.”
“Well, yeah. Anyway, I’ve been telling her a little bit about what we’ve been learning from you. At first she seemed really interested. Then she told me that her grandmother and mother warned her about what I was saying, and about what you have been teaching us. They told her something about it being contrary to the teachings of the Church. By the time I got around to asking her to the Homecoming Dance, the first time I ever asked anyone to go out, she said no! Her mother and grandmother didn’t want her to go out with me. She cried when she told me.”
I had to stop talking. In my mind I could see her tears. It was all I could do to hold back my own tears. I got all choked up.
“That is a real bummer,” said Tony. “Those two ladies don’t even know anything about what you’re teaching us, and they don’t like it.”
“These family beliefs about ‘the old ways’ run very deep,” said Don Emilio, “especially when they think their Catholic beliefs are threatened.”
He looked at me and put his hand on my shoulder.
“Are you okay mijo?” I nodded my head. “I have heard some talk about this,” he continued. “Is this the grandmother who is a friend of your Nana?”
“Yeah, they’re good friends,” I said, nodding again.
“Yes, she mentioned this situation to me.”
“Well, aren’t we just the talk of the town,” said Tony, grinning.
“So,” I said, trying to move the conversation off me, “that was how I lost some energy. What about things like lying, cheating, or wishing for something bad to happen to someone?”
“Yes,” he answered, “those are good examples. So you can understand how these deplete our spiritual energy, and move us away from a strong connection with God.”
“I think I’m getting it now,” I said. “To keep our energy up, we need to be aware of things that cause us to lose energy. Plus, we need to do things that increase our energy. We have to do more increasing than losing, so that we can have more energy. With more energy, we can change our thought bubbles into reality and create what we think about.”
“Yes, this is how the process of creation works,” said Don Emilio, nodding his head in agreement. “This is the magical nature of the universe, and the core of the secret of your ancestors. That is why up to now we have practiced the focused-attention exercises and other techniques for increasing your energy. But, as we discussed, you cannot just increase your energy on one hand and then lose it on the other. It is very important to be aware of how you lose energy, and to stop doing things that cause you to leak energy.
So, for the next few weeks, keep a daily record of each time you do something to deplete your energy. Be honest with yourselves and write down everything that happens that causes you to leak energy. Write down what you did and make a note of how you felt afterward. Write it as soon as possible after any event, so you remember how you felt at that moment. Then total up the number of times it happened each day. As each week progresses, see if you can reduce the number of times it happens each day.”
“And write it down with a pen, not a pencil,” I said to Tony, “so you can’t cheat.”
“You don’t cheat, neither,” Tony shouted, laughing. “Just be sure to write down all the times you leak, you cheat!”
“Let us stop here for the day before you feel too overloaded,” said Don Emilio smiling at our antics. “This is a very active assignment, and it will require your attention during each day. Make this task a priority, along with your focused-attention exercises, and do as many of the other energy practices as you can. We have more to cover on creating, so we will continue this discussion next time we meet, which will be the first weekend in December. Oh, and as we discussed before, remember to say a prayer of thanks at your meal on Thanksgiving day.”
As anxious as I was to hear everything he had to teach us, I appreciated the fact that he was still spacing our sessions out to give us time to practice these assignments. While the list continued to grow, Don Emilio seemed to be trying to keep it from being too much of a burden on us by telling us to focus on some and to do as much of the others as possible. That way we couldn’t complain about the amount of exercises we had. And that made one less thing to leak energy over.
