San Diego Dist. 8, National City, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista
By Barbara Zaragoza
The June 7th election is coming soon and we in the South Bay want to know who will be on our ballots. Here’s a primer for your local elections:
South San Diego: Your Councilmember is David Alvarez, District 8
You are part of San Diego’s District 8 if you live in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa (East & West), Nestor, Palm City, Egger Highlands, Tijuana River Valley. Your current representative on the San Diego City Council is liberal Latino David Alvarez. He will not be up for re-election until 2018.
You can see the work of Alvarez around town regularly. Recently I wrote an article about the lack of volunteer commissioners in the city. Alvarez attended the meeting and spoke out about the Citizen’s Review Board on Police Practices, saying: “In a city where a third of residents are Latino, we do not have one Latino sitting on that board of over twenty-five individuals.”
For the City of San Diego, Mayor Kevin Faulconer is up for re-election and he has several opponents. Read our expert, Doug Porter, at the San Diego Free Press who will cover the Mayoral election along with the City Attorney. He will also describe the ballot measures in San Diego you might want to know about.
National City & Imperial Beach: You Have Until November
Your cities don’t have much on the ballot in the June primaries. However, your November elections are important.
For National City:
Your City Councilmembers, Vice Mayor Jerry Cano and Councilmember Alejandra Sotelo-Solis will be up for re-election. Your City Treasurer, Mitch Beauchamp is also up for re-election.
Your National City School District Trustees up for re-election will be: Barbara Avalos and Brian Clapper (President)
For Imperial Beach:
Your City Councilmembers, Brian Bilbray and Robert Patton are up for re-election in November.
Your South Bay Union School District Trustees up from re-election will be Barbara Elliott-Sanders (President) and Thomas Schaaf (Clerk).
Chula Vista: 1 City Council Seat Up For Election In November
If you live in District 3, you have until November to decide between Jason Paguio and Steve Padilla as your City Council representative. Also, several bond measures may come up and I’m covering those each week in North of the Fence. They will affect whether infrastructure improves, schools are built and renovated, and how much your taxes will increase.
However, the most important race in the June 7th primary will be for Chula Vista City Council Seat District 4. I’ll be covering the candidates tomorrow.
