… San Ysidro’s Alcohol Ban, and Chula Vista’s Novo Brazil Brewing Co. Takes Home Bronze
By Barbara Zaragoza
Bernie Sanders is coming to National City. He’s scheduled to speak Saturday, May 21, at Kimball Park. The event is free, open to the public and will be first-come, first-served. The Times of San Diego has an online RSVP form.
It’s not the first time a presidential candidate has visited National City. Mayor Ron Morrison wrote on his Facebook account: “Presidential Candidate Senator Bernie Sanders will be holding a public rally in National City’s Kimball Park this Saturday evening. In 1992 then Gov. Bill Clinton held a rally in Kimball Park and in 1968 Bobby Kennedy held a rally at South Bay Plaza. In the Center of it All!”
Novo Brazil Brewing Takes Bronze At 2016 World Beer Cup
The City of Chula Vista sent out a news release announcing that Novo Brazil Brewing Company won a Bronze Medal at the 2016 World Beer Cup competition for its Corvo Negro. The competition was held in Philadelphia earlier this month and had 6,500 entrants from 63 countries. You’ll remember my write-up of Novo Brazil (I was the first to find and write about them!). The brewery opened in 2015 at 901 Lane Avenue, Chula Vista.
The World Beer Cup is considered the world’s most important competition and happens every two years. Novo Brazil’s bronze medal was in the category of British Style Imperial Stout. The brewer beat more than 50 other entries from countries around the world. The announcement also comes right after last weekend’s Amps & Ale event that was held in downtown Chula Vista. The Union Tribune had a write-up this week about our beer, the event and #SouthBayRising.
Proposition R and Southwestern College
Crossroads II, the community based organization that brings local political news to Chula Vista residents, sent an email detailing how Southwestern College has been using Proposition R. Prop R is the $389 million general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2008. The upshot: this link shows specifically how bonds are being used for construction and modernization on campuses at Chula Vista, National City, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro.
Chula Vista To Add New Homeless Outreach Team
The Chula Vista City Manager will present a fiscal year 2016-2017 budget on Tuesday, May 24, at their City Council meeting. The proposed budget including a General Fund operating budget of $146.3 million and a Capital Improvement Program budget of $20.7, according to a news release from the city’s Office of Communications.
According to the news release, “Budget highlights include allocating $150,000 to outfit two new fire engines and use existing grant fund balance for the purchase of several new police vehicles; adding two new police officers and one new park ranger to form the City’s new Homeless Outreach Team.”
The news release also says, “While the proposed FY 2016-17 budget is balanced, the City’s financial outlook is more strained than it has been in recent years. Positive revenue growth in major discretionary revenues is being outpaced by pension and health care cost increases.”
Border Building Happens Daily
The Union Tribune reports that keeping California’s border fence intact is a $9 million-a-year job. Between San Ysidro and Otay Mesa the wall is punched through about 550 times per year. The article also explains: “In 2007, the Congressional Research Office estimated the cost of building 700 miles of fence, and then maintaining it for 25 years: $49 billion.” See the full details here.
San Ysidro and Ocean View Hills Want Alcohol Ban
Marty Graham at the San Diego Reader reports that residents of San Ysidro and Ocean View Hills created an alcohol ban for their neighborhood parks. The council of the Ocean View Hills Recreation Council unanimously supported the request for a ban. The San Ysidro neighborhood planning group and the recreational council also voted unanimously.
The Amgen Tour Comes To Imperial Beach
On Sunday, May 15, the Amgen Tour of California bike racers sped through Imperial Beach along Seacoast Drive. These are the same teams that will compete in the Tour de France. Afterwards, there was a community bike ride. This might be considered another marker that IB is becoming a tourist destination and another important highlight in South Bay’s continued attempt to create a bike-friendly environment that extends from the Border to downtown San Diego.
