TrumpCare and the Senate – Where are we?
As of Saturday, June 24, there are five GOP Senators who have said they will not vote for the bill the way it is now — three of those Senators believe the bill is not conservative enough.
Beginning Monday night, Senate Democrats will attempt to stop business in the Senate by objecting to all unanimous consent requests. Some Democratic Senators are also planning to block committee hearings beginning on Tuesday, but Democrats have not officially committed to that.
In plain speak: There are weird, old rules in the Senate. Democratic Senators are trying to jam the Senate’s normal business in some of the ways available to them but not all.
Call your senator and demand that they exhaust every possibility in opposing this healthcare bill for the rich.
House – Check in here for the schedule this week.
Senate – Attempting to take healthcare away from millions of people with a bill that has been hastily rushed together in secret and will reshape a sixth of the American economy. Shame on the GOP!
Issa’s activities: (Local section)
In the News:
June 21 – In Politico: A DCCC polling graphic from the last few months shows a 9-point Democratic lead in Issa’s 49th district!
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Ben Ray Lujan wrote in a memo to committee staff:
“In more than 24 districts and counting, generic Democrats are leading in the polls or have already made significant shifts from the last polls available in 2016.”
June 20, 21 – Issa posts three separate items on Facebook (and tweets) about Obamacare, including an attack on Nancy Pelosi, ranging from misrepresentations to outright lies, to defend Trumpcare. The San Diego Free Press’ Doug Porter extensively breaks down each of Issa’s unfactual claims here.
Highlights of Congressional Legislation:
HR 2940: To allow members of Congress to carry concealed firearms anywhere in the US with exceptions. NEW
SRes197: A resolution to provide sufficient time for legislation to be read. (A bill from Rand Paul, presumably referring to TrumpCare.) NEW
HR 3004: Kate’s Law – A bill that strengthens sentencing penalties for immigrants who have committed misdemeanors or felonies and try to reenter the US. NEW
HR 3003: No Sanctuary for Criminals Act – Punishing state and local governments (Sanctuary cities/states) that do not comply with federal immigration laws. NEW
Recommended Action: Call your senator and demand that they exhaust every possibility in opposing this healthcare bill for the rich. We will not stand for less.
