San Diego Pride Weekend Plus Dozens of Other Events
Who knew one vote could be so important? That’s all it will take to stop TreasonCare V.3 in the United States Senate. Two key Senators on opposite ends of the GOP political spectrum have already said ‘no way.’
The latest iteration of “Repeal and Replace” has been gussied up and simultaneously hollowed out in a desperate attempt to win votes. The Republican masterminds behind this legislation somehow “forgot” to submit its most significant revision (a Ted Cruz amendment) to the Congressional Budget Office in time for any analysis prior to the expected vote next week.
For those Republican Senators who actually bothered to read the legislative language and are troubled by what they see, the administration is holding meetings to assure them the really bad news about Medicaid coverage will be mitigated by executive actions. The fact remains, however, the $182 billion state stabilization fund can’t possibly cover the expected $772 billion in cuts to the program over the next decade.
At this point, anything perceived as “win” is all the GOP wants. They’ll promise or say anything to get there. A whopping 61% of the American public opposes the plan.
So, if you know people in states with Senators known to be wavering on this legislation, make a call, send a text, or DM urging them to send a message to Capitol Hill.
In the meantime, there is lots of activist action in San Diego over the next ten days.
So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Pride celebrations everywhere trace their heritage to the evening of June 28, 1969 when patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City said “No more!” to police harassment. That protest has grown to annual events held in major cities throughout the world.
In San Diego, our first rally was held in 1975. San Diego Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally is a time to recognize and honor leaders who are working hard to preserve our gains and meet the many challenges still facing our community.

The discussion will include the California Medicare for All bill SB 562, and the California Values Act SB 54.
The main subject of July’s meeting will be the DSA National Convention, to be held at the Univ. of Illinois in Chicago from August 3-6. Our chapter will send seven delegates, an alternate, and an observer. This convention will be by far the largest ever held by DSA, and will set DSA’s path for the next two years. The delegates have been observing the discussions of issues that the Convention will decide, and will do our best to inform our chapter of the key decisions to be made. Prominent party members have called for action yet local Democratic Party leadership, under the direction of Jessica Hayes, have consistently sided with Kasparian and denigrated his accusers and their supporters. Hayes has even changed meeting locations thinking it will stop supporters from protesting!

Hosted by San Diego Italian Film Festival
Thousands of Jewish survivors landed in Southern Italy after WW II. Amazed by the welcome they received from the local population that so contrasted with the years of hatred, they found joy and healing while they awaited entry to a new life. Shores of Light: Salento 1945-1947 follows the story of three Israeli women born during this time as they discover the place and culture where their parents began to believe in life again. Weaving rare historical footage with unique current testimonials, the film captures a ray of light after great darkness.
The current world climate creates more refugees every single day, with fear and uncertainty overshadowing the lives of millions. The San Diego Italian Film Festival invites you to experience an Italian story about a different, older refugee crisis that faced similar uncertainty in a global search for humanity. Join us after the film for a special panel discussion with front-line experts on refugee aid to discuss Shores of Light and how it relates to today’s world.
