As hard as it may be to take our eyes off the train wreck happening in Washington DC, there are significant local developments worthy of our attention this week.
Court papers filed by the lawyer for Mexican businessman Jose Susumo Azano Matsura this week claim former DA Bonnie Dumanis knew he was a foreign citizen and legally barred from funding her 2012 mayoral campaign, yet sought his money anyway.
Attorney Knut Johnson contended both Dumanis and her campaign fundraiser Kelli Maruccia embarked on an “unrelenting solicitation of campaign funds from Mr. Azano and his company knowing he was a foreign national,” in a 25-page memo arguing against prison for his client.
Azano was convicted in Federal Court in 2016 of funneling about $600,000 in campaign contributions to the mayoral bids of Bonnie Dumanis and Bob Filner.
The former County District Attorney issued a statement calling the claim a “Hail Mary tactic from defense attorneys trying to save their clients from the consequences of their actions.”
From Union-Tribune:
Dumanis resigned as District Attorney in July, then announced in September she was running for a seat on the county Board of Supervisors to replace Supervisor Ron Roberts. It is expected to be a fiercely contested race where Dumanis’s tenure as DA, as well as the Azano case, will likely come up.
Dumanis has long said that she was unaware of the tainted money donated to her losing mayoral effort, and said she barely knew Azano. The new documents contradict her version of events, specifically a March 2, 2012, meeting among Dumanis, Azano, Sheriff Bill Gore and former San Diego police Detective Ernie Encinas.
Dave Myers, the County Sheriff’s Watch Commander currently in bureaucratic purgatory for daring to run against his boss, had plenty to say:
“I am thoroughly disheartened by the disclosure of this new information. Not only was Bill Gore allegedly aware of a potential federal offense, it would appear this disclosure happened in our department’s headquarters, a building I view as sacred in terms of the enforcement of our laws.
Gore’s insistence that he has “no recollection” of the conversation, if accurate, would further demonstrate an incredible lack of judgment and serve as just one more instance where the sheriff acted in a manner at odds with being at the highest level of law enforcement in our county. The fact that Bonnie Dumanis testified she thought Azano was a citizen, only to have that testimony contradicted, is troubling, to say the least.
We demand Bill Gore come clean on what happened at this meeting. We have a right to know the full level of his involvement if he ever discussed this case with the FBI or the US Attorney’s office, and why he chose to remain silent in the face of such a transgression. As a peace officer, if Gore knew or should have known a felony was being committed, he has an obligation under the law to report. We have demanded accountability out of this Sheriff’s Department. I think it’s past time our demands were met.”

Are you happy about Mayor Kevin Faulconer finally taking some non-punitive action on San Diego’s Homeless Humans? Sorry folks, he robbed Peter to pay Paul to do it. I’ll just leave this right here:

Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Mayor Faulconer has presided over half of this Manmade Disaster — the loss of 10k units of low-income housing, which has directly resulted in the spike of Unsheltered San Diegans during his tenure. As City Councilmember, he supported these actions.
We will stand Silent Vigil with Signs for the 3000+ Unsheltered San Diegans who have no safe place to stay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer continues to refuse to activate San Diego’s designated Mass Emergency Shelter: Qualcomm/now SDCCU Stadium — as it was for wildfire victims in 2007. Why not for indigent San Diegans, of which 21% are African-American/Black, made homeless by the City’s decisions to replace low-income housing with market-rate/luxury development? See more here.

While we are not 100% certain what will happen at the hearing, the purpose is to follow up on the judge’s ruling that information about the confidential informant in the case is material, and must be revealed to the defense. Because of this ruling, the DA has to decide what they want to do: dismiss the case rather than reveal this information, reveal the information and continue with the case, continue with the case, but ask that the judge put certain restrictions on revealing the info about the informant such as a protective order, or file a writ over her ruling. It is also possible that on Friday, the DA will seek more time to decide what to do.
