Now that we’ve reached the one year mark in the Trump administration, there are many successes to look back on. It should also be clear this process of protest and activism is a marathon, not a sprint. Ain’t no superhero gonna fix this mess.
We can all look to the victory of those participating in the weekly protests outside Rep. Darrell Issa’s office for inspiration. They resisted. They persisted. And the richest man in Congress decided he could take it no more.
There are more than a dozen contingents participating in the San Diego and North County Women’s Marches; people whose common activism leads them to want to show their solidarity with his and other events.
Not all of us have the time and energy to make full-time commitments. And that’s okay. Do what you can, and do it with a smile on your face and a song in your hear.
There are more than 30 events taking placing throughout San Diego County listed in the week’s Progressive Activist Calendar. Perhaps one of them is a good fit for you. And if this week’s offerings don’t entice you, click on this link to get this calendar via email every Friday.
Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Hosted by NAN San Diego & Imperial Counties
Welcome author & anti-racism activist Jane Elliot for our Martin Luther King 88th birthday celebration. In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Jane Elliott devised the controversial and startling, “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise. This, now famous, exercise labels participants as inferior or superior based solely upon the color of their eyes and exposes them to the experience of being a minority. Everyone who is exposed to Jane Elliott’s work, be it through a lecture, workshop, or video, is dramatically affected by it.

Say No to Walk For Life’s Lies
Saturday, January 20, 8am
Balboa Park 6th & Laurel
For More Information
Hosted by Democratic Socialists of America
Join us to counter-demonstrate the anti-women, anti-trans, anti-reproductive justice “Walk For Life”
We are here to protect women’s lives. Not only is the self-proclaimed “pro-life” movement an attack on women’s bodily autonomy, it also encourages cruelty and violence towards women, and plays a direct hand in causing their deaths. The UN acknowledges denying women access to abortion as a form of torture. Forced pregnancies require that women suffer through pain and expense, and risk death. Worldwide, 68,000 women die of unsafe abortions annually, making it one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, and of the women who survive unsafe abortion, 5 million will suffer long-term health complications.
The necessity of free abortion on demand is reflected in how the inaccessibility of legal abortion disproportionately affects lower-income women and women of color. Today, 32 states won’t cover abortions for low-income women who become pregnant as a result of rape or incest, or in cases of a severely deformed fetus. Low-income women of color are then scapegoated for the social ills caused by wealthy men legislating devastating cuts to social services. The fight for free abortion on demand, then, is a fight for healthcare for all, and a fight against austerity.
We cannot afford to compromise on this issue–the anti-choicers have no issue with using intimidation tactics. They storm women’s clinics, harassing them and threatening their lives; and with the administration on their side, they face no repercussions. So, it’s up to us to defend women’s autonomy over their own bodies, as well as their lives. Free abortion on demand, can we do it? Yes we can!

WEBINAR INFORMATION (www.aclunc.org/ourfuture)
▼▼▼Voting Rights▼▼▼
California has one of the lowest rates of voter registration and voter turn-out in the country. 2018 is a critical year for ballot measures, local elections like the DA races, and of course, changing who holds the keys to power. In this webinar, we’ll give you the resources you need to get all eligible California voters to the polls, starting now!
▼▼▼Reproductive Justice & Sex Education▼▼▼
We’re in a critical moment. Sexual harassment and abuse is being both challenged and normalized. Discrimination against LGBTQ people is on the rise. Here in California, we have the power to make a change. Our schools are required to teach sex ed that addresses healthy relationships and consent and that challenges stereotypes about gender and sexual orientation. But many school districts need extra encouragement to provide the required instruction. They need to hear from you. In this webinar, you will learn how to be an advocate for sex education in your district.
▼▼▼Criminal Justice Reform▼▼▼
Right now, a powerful coalition of conservative law enforcement is targeting California mayors and city councils with a cynical misinformation campaign. Their goal is to increase support for mass incarceration and roll back the clock on criminal justice reform. We need you to counter their lies with the truth. In this webinar, we’ll set you up with the skills you need to advocate for local initiatives that truly promote public safety and healthy communities.

Enero Zapatista 2018: Environmental Justice & Decolonization
Wednesday, January 24, 7pm
Digital Gym Cinema
2921 El Cajon Boulevard
For More Information (Registration)
As a settler-colonial nation, the United States occupies indigenous land and it continues to seize/pollute native land and water, as seen through the Dakota Access Pipeline violence at Standing Rock in 2016-2017 – one of the many examples of settler violence. Land/water/air/fire justice is crucial for decolonization and for the defense and repatriation of indigenous land and life. Zapatista autonomy has shown us that land, water, and life are intimately connected and must be protected and renewed. How do we take these lessons into our own movements?
By focusing on indigenous and POC activism, we will discuss the possibilities and limits of environmental justice struggles locally and globally, including: San Diego-Tijuana border pollution & toxicity, Los Angeles/Bay Area activism, and South American anti-colonial struggles for water.
PANELISTS:
Carolina Martinez, Environmental Health Coalition San Diego
Marlene Brito-Millan, Marine Biologist & Solidarity Activist with South America’s Water Struggles
Oscar Gutierrez, LA/Bay Area Environmental Justice Activist
Amrah Salomon J., UCSD Community Labor Project
Manuel Belmonte, Biochemist and Environmental Justice Activist

For More Information (RSVP)
Hosted by Health Care for All San Diego Chapter
Attention business leaders, entrepreneurs, and the self-employed! Come discover why universal single-payer healthcare is a smart business decision.
SB 562 The Healthy California Act would enact single-payer universal healthcare in California. A statewide plan such as this would save businesses money by eliminating waste, reducing administrative duplication, and introducing better cost controls.
Beyond cost-savings, it would also free up Human Resource departments from the tedious process of selecting and implementing plans for employees. Plus, small businesses and start-ups would be more competitive in attracting top talent because potential employees would no longer fear losing benefits. We’ll cover these topics and much more! There will be a showing of excerpts from the film “Fix It,” followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Countywide Walk for Progress
Saturday, January 27, 10-2pm
East County: El Cajon City Park
North County: Shadowridge Park (Vista)
Central San Diego: Democratic Party HQ (8340 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard
Hosted by San Diego County Democratic Party
Kick off 2018 with a neighborhood walk to mobilize voters! At four simultaneous events throughout the county, volunteers will be walking in precincts with a high percentage of newly registered Democrats. First we’ll ask voters to commit to turn out in the upcoming elections. Then we’ll give them information about our endorsed Democratic candidates for countywide office: District Attorney, Sheriff, Assessor, and Board of Supervisors.
Many voters are not aware that our elected leaders in county government are all Republicans – despite the fact that Democrats outnumber Republicans here by more than 100,000. Voters also need to know that these county races could be won outright in June, so voting in the primary is critical to ensure county leadership that represents our community. Please join us to help spread the word!

Food Is A Right! El Cajon Solidarity Action
Saturday, January 27, 3pm
Wells Park
1153 East Madison Avenue (El Cajon)
For More Information (Civil Disobedience)
Hosted by Food Not Bombs San Diego
On October 24, 2017, the El Cajon City Council voted 5-0 to ban “food sharing events” that specifically benefit homeless residents of El Cajon. Food Not Bombs alongside various community members will continue to openly defy this ban by sharing free food, clothing, and hygiene items!
Food Not Bombs has fed hundreds of thousands of people across the world, including families, kids playing in public spaces, residents that live in nearby low-income housing and anyone else passing by that wants a bowl of soup. We strongly believe that sharing food in public places is not what maintains issues with homelessness, and that the city of El Cajon and the county of San Diego have a responsibility to provide sanitation facilities and housing first.
