“Truth Isn’t Truth” – Rudy Guliani, August 19, 2018
If you were anywhere near the State Approved media lately, no doubt you heard about California’s upcoming ban on restaurants serving sodas to children. It must be true because Faux News and The Hill (among others) have made this assertion in headlines.
Except that it’s not true. Today’s headlines are based on an August 16 story in the Sacramento Bee which said no such thing:
In an effort to combat childhood obesity and other diseases linked to sugar consumption, California may soon require restaurants to serve water or unflavored milk as the default beverage for children’s meals that pair a food item with a drink.
Senate Bill 1192, which passed the Assembly on Thursday, would allow customers to specifically order alternatives, such as soda or juice. The bill is silent on whether the restaurant would have to change extra for the substitute.
(Quick fact: McDonald’s is already doing this with its kids meals)
The bill has to go back the California State Senate for unanimity on language and the to Gov. Brown’s desk. So it’s not law yet.
Now, in the interests of being truthful, both the Fox News and Hill stories did include some variance of what SB1192 actually seeks to accomplish. But the headlines and the timelines were done in such a manner any real Trumpista would be too enraged to read that far.

“Just remember: what you’re seeing and what you’re hearing is not what’s happening” -President Donald Trump
Remember good ol’ political spin? It doesn’t get any spinnier (™) than “tornado.”
Here ya’ go, 2018 style, via Laura Clawson at Daily Kos:
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is campaigning among his fellow Republicans to be the next speaker of the House … but first Republicans need to hold onto their majority. No majority, no speaker, no promotion for McCarthy or—barring a coup—anyone else. To get his promotion, McCarthy is first trying to protect that majority (and gather some IOUs) by raising vats of money and criss-crossing the country campaigning for House candidates.
“This could be a tornado, but it won’t be a wave,” he said. “A tornado touches down in spots. A wave crashes over everybody.”

California’s spate of wildfires has nothing to do with climate change and environmental radicals are to blame, according to Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and other Trump administration officials.
From the Huffington Post:
Whether or not climate change is helping drive extreme wildfire, Zinke told Cavuto, is “irrelevant to what’s occurred.” To emphasize his point, Zinke noted the more than 120 million dead trees in California. What he didn’t mention, of course, is that the trees died because of a years-long drought that scientists have concluded was made worse by anthropogenic climate change…
…By Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump chimed in. At a Cabinet meeting, the president “complimented Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke for saying the California fires are ‘not a global warming thing,’” reported Daniel Dale, a correspondent for the Toronto Star, reported.
The administration appears to be using the disaster in California as an opportunity to push partisan policy, as HuffPost previously reported. Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross have attempted to connect devastating California wildfires to a longstanding fight between farmers and environmentalists over water resources.

Unfortunately, lies are contagious Take Catholic League president Bill Donohue’s response to the investigation of child-molesting priests in Pennsylvania.
Over 1000 victims were identified by the special grand jury along with over 300 priests named in church documents dating back to 1947.
The 900-page report was replete with stories from victims, police blotters and church officials, including a May 2000 account of a Pittsburgh priest who admitted to touching 500 kids and targeting “at least” 1,200 other children.
Here’s a snip from the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights takedown of news reports about the tragedy:
“Most of the alleged victims were not raped: they were groped or otherwise abused, but not penetrated, which is what the word “rape” means. This is not a defense — it is meant to set the record straight and debunk the worst case scenarios attributed to the offenders.”

“Our press secretary gave alternative facts to that” – Kelly Ann Conway, describing the crowd size at the inauguration
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did its best to tamp down outrage over news reports of the arrest of a man driving his pregnant wife to a hospital for delivery of their baby at a gas station in San Bernadino.
After breaking down in tears, Maria del Carmen Venegas drove herself to the hospital for a scheduled C-section.
As ICE has done on other occasions —and been proven wrong— they claimed the man was wanted for criminal activity.
Given the amount of coverage this incident was generating, the alleged crime had to be a big one, and it was: murder.
The couple has lived together in Southern California for 12 years and along with the newborn have four children ages 2 to 13 years old. Unable to come up with a domestic arrest record or warrant, the government now claims Joel Arrona-Lara is wanted in Mexico. The family says that’s simply not true.It makes no difference at this point. The “murder” story has made the rounds, and as has happened in the past, ICE will likely be unable or unwilling to show evidence during his deportation hearing.
I was wrong. Unlike the GOP White House, I acknowledge my errors. The Associated Press is saying there is a warrant for his arrest from the Mexican state of Guanajuato

Local myth, debunked.
Gosh, does everybody remember all the local politicos and pundit telling us about how the public was shortchanged when the City Council decided not to change its rule to allow a Convention Center expansion on the ballot?
That time when I polled a #ConCenter measure vs. a Homelessness only one. And our electeds continue to ignore what voters will support. pic.twitter.com/qK4p7mHun7
