People worldwide will mobilize this weekend under the banner of Rise for Climate, a grassroots movement seeking a fossil fuel free world.
More than 600 events are planned in at least 80 countries, with one of the key aims to challenge the decision-makers attending the Global Climate Summit in California on September 12 to escalate decarbonization efforts and targets.
The flagship event in San Fransisco will be the largest climate march the US west coast has ever seen, according to organizers. Nationwide, community groups are finding innovative ways to urge a future in which all energy sources are 100% renewable, including an initiative asking participants to share artworks related to the movement.
There are events in both Downtown and Oceanside on Saturday, September 8 listed in this week’s calendar.

Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.
Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Join us as we march alongside workers, students, human rights activists, frontline, Indigenous, and faith communities at the Rise For Climate March San Diego. We intend to send a powerful message to our leaders: today we are standing at a #ClimateCrossroads. The Trump administration and the fossil fuel industry gravely threaten the future of our planet, the safety of our communities, and the health of our families. We cannot wait to #RiseForClimate and demand the #FossilFree world we need.
On September 8, just before the Global Climate Action Summit brings leaders from around the world to San Francisco to discuss climate solutions, the people will come together to march outside the summit, and in hundreds of locations around the world.
Together we will march to protect our air, water, and land. We will march for our communities, for clean energy jobs, and for the people we love. We will commit to voting for climate champions. In solidarity with all those who are oppressed in our society, we will demand #ClimateJustice.
The Rise For Climate March San Diego will gather at City Hall for live music, inspiring speeches, and participatory actions followed by a short march to South Embarcadero Park where we’ll have voter registration, activities, and a Kid’s Zone with games and face-painting.

Hosted by SanDiego350
As part of the Rise for Climate! events on Saturday, Sept. 8, the new Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice is holding A Prayer and Meditation for the Earth, Our Common Home at Civic Center Plaza just ahead of the main rally.
Our event will begin with spoken prayers from several of our local faith leaders. Then whoever is able will lie down upon the ground in a square formation for 20 minutes of silent prayer/meditation, facing east, then west, north and south. When the silent prayer is finished, we will create a joyous noise as a sign of action and hope. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be done by 9:30.
Why do we gather in prayer and meditation for the earth? To acknowledge the damage that we have done to it and move to restore our relationship with it.

The community of Fallbrook has united to oppose the proposed detention camp for immigrants & refugees in Camp Pendleton. According to plans by the Department of Defense, the plan was to hold up to 47,000 people and entire families in detention. For the time being, the plan did not move forward, but the risk is still present and other military bases in Texas have been designated to detain families who deserve due process, not detention.
To continue reinforcing our commitment to defend migrants we invite you to a community forum about the realities of the policies that threaten migrant communities, our democracy and our values.
Attorney Monika Langarica (Immigration Justice Project) will present on the legal history of detention.
Merely Ramirez (Otay Detention Resistance) will present on the refugee led struggle to defend detainees in Otay.

For over 25 years I have lived in La Mesa and was lucky enough to have raised my family here. I am still proud to call La Mesa my home. Many of you know that for the past year and a half I have advocated for transparency and accountability from our elected officials. Specifically, as a candidate for San Diego County Sheriff. I know firsthand the issues being raised by voters.
I am running for La Mesa City Council because I believe that my service to the community is not done. I am eager to get to work on solving our communities most pressing issues. Issues that affect businesses, low-income families, middle-class families, entrepreneurs, police officers, firefighters, and more. I hope you’ll join me as we work together to polish the jewel of the hills.

Lunch & Learn – “Lana Gets Her Talk” Short Documentary
Monday, September 10, 11:30am
Friendship Hall – University Christian Church
3900 Cleveland Avenue (Hillcrest)
For More Information (RSVP)
Hosted by Interfaith Worker Justice of San Diego County
September’s Lunch & Learn deviates a bit from our usual gatherings, in that our featured “Speaker” is a short film. However, through the film, Lana, an artist and First Nation woman, tells her story of healing from the family trauma incurred through Indian Residential Schools in Canada, which were run by faith communities of particular Christian denominations. The United States has a similar history and more urgently, could be looking at a near future in which people of faith are called to respond to families being separated and children torn from their families and culture. Let us proactively look at how to help mitigate the situation while honoring all people and families.
The Lunch and Learn series from IWJSD is a program that seeks to introduce various faiths and traditions to the public highlighting the social justice strain within religions and to provide an interactive forum for discussion and discovery. NOTE: Lunch is NOT provided. Please bring your own lunch. Suggested donation is $5, however, no one will be turned away for not making a donation.

Vista Council Re-Vote to join the Trump lawsuit!
Tuesday, September 11, 4:30pm
Vista City Hall
200 Civic Center Drive
For More Information
Hosted by Democratic Club of Vista Announcements
The City of Vista will RE-VOTE to join the Trump lawsuit to sue the state of CA to opt out of The California Values Act which keeps our communities safe and justice upheld. We need bodies at the council meeting with signs of support for the CA Values Act; think Love NOT Hate!
You might recall that the original vote to join the Trump lawsuit was taken when Councilmember John Aguilar wasn’t present. He did not cast a vote. This was a miscarriage of justice, and his vote will be on record at this meeting. Our group will congregate behind the main entrance to the Civic Center, in the amphitheater at 4:30 pm. We will discuss talking points for those who are willing to speak at the council meeting which starts at 5:30.
We need to fill the council chambers with people who embrace LOVE NOT HATE! We are anticipating a show of anti-immigration support, so our numbers must be larger. Get a public speaking talk card and come with a lap size sign that shows your support for the California Values Act, justice and our immigrant brothers and sisters. This is a turning point for our city and the RE-VOTE must happen in order to join the Trump lawsuit appeal before 9/25. All council previously voted to join the lawsuit, with the exception of Councilmember Joe Green who opposed. Missing Councilmember, John Aguilera will now get to cast his vote! PLEASE come and be a voice for those who might not have one.

Personal artist statement: I started my LA FRONTERA: Artists along the U.S. – Mexican Border project in 2008 and I photographed over 200 artists to date in order to address the positive cultural activities and opportunities in this border region. The many and highly talented artists along the 2000 miles long divide usually co-operate rather than separate, they maintain friendships and work together in their communities and across the border, many teach or show their art in both the U.S. and Mexico on a regular basis. Some use the border as a canvas for their work.
They all help tearing down the walls between people, those walls that exist and grow mostly in our minds. I photographed artists in Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Juarez, Agua Prieta, Naco, Nogales, Mexicali, Tecate, Tijuana, Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen, El Paso, Calexico and San Diego.

Police Brutality is still very much present in our communities of color. Tasha Williamson( lead organizer in the #justice4EarlMcNeil case) and Bishop Bowser are both members of Community Assistance Support Team (CAST), have worked consistently in our community on issues surrounding law Enforcement and their unjust was of treating and killing people of color in our communities. Join us this day as they host our next RJC meeting and help us gain more insight on Earl’s case and other issues that affect our people of color in San Diego.
Tragedies with questionable circumstances involving police aren’t common, but they’re also not rare. It’s long been obvious that the best possible response from police agencies and the elected leaders who oversee them is to release all relevant information as soon as it is available — not to try to manage controversies. If autopsies or video from body cams or dash cams reflect poorly on officers’ conduct, delaying the release of the information won’t lessen its sting; it will only add to problems by creating or confirming the impression of a cover-up.
Yet in the tragic case of Earl McNeil, those lessons are being ignored by officials in National City. The 40-year-old ended up dead after being arrested on May 26 outside the city’s police station. The officers who came outside to speak with McNeil after he called a dispatcher said he was talking irrationally and appeared agitated, then became combative when they attempted to detain him. He was placed in a stiff nylon blanket restraint known as the Wrap and later suffered what police called “medical distress” while being examined by paramedics at the county jail. He was taken to a hospital, where he died June 11 after being taken off life support.

There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.
