Traditionally media coverage of elections has focused on the actual election day. It’s time to dump that mindset. If the June primary was any indication (and it was), close to two-thirds of the electorate in San Diego will have already cast their vote before November 6.
Mail-in ballots are headed for the post office this weekend; people will receive them starting on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday). I’m told that most of the early returns from mail-in votes are from people who’d already made up their minds.
I suspect many readers of this publication know who they’re going to vote for in the big name contests. I’m fairly certain many of those same folks don’t know who to vote for in the contest for San Diego Superior Court Office #37. If you were unhappy about Brett Kavanaugh, you might want to know about Gary Kreep.
The San Diego Free Press voter guide will be published on this site on Monday. It covers 23 state and local ballot measures, statewide elected offices, local contests for Assembly and State Senate, area Congressional districts, County Supervisors districts, San Diego City Council seats, and a smattering of other races throughout the county with candidates we were able to identify as progressives. Each listing contains links for candidate’s websites, social media, and endorsements.
We made recommendations for all the ballot measures, and endorsements in 37 contests.
Learning about who and what to vote for doesn’t have to be a chore. Taking one hour out of your life in the next few weeks might someday make the difference on issues impacting your health, your professional and personal life, and the people you care for.
The good news here is there are relatively easy fixes for electoral uncertainty. First up, you need to know who and what will be on the ballot you’re going to cast. View your sample ballot here by plugging in your address.
There are lots of websites with voter information. Vote Smart offers up a wealth of information on elections anywhere in the country. Voter’s Edge (this the same as using the KPBS guide) allows you to plug in your address and see research on those candidates and propositions appearing on your ballot. The San Diego County Democratic Party has a handy-dandy printable PDF of their endorsements.
There are 1.7 million registered voters in San Diego County. If you aren’t one of them, I’ve got good news: You have until October 20 to sign up. Here’s the link to register to vote. Not sure if you’re registered? Check here.
Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.
Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Fighting Super Pollutants: Solutions to Bend the Warming Curve
Thursday, October 11, 5:30pm
Vista Library
700 Eucalyptus Avenue
For More Information
Hosted by North County Climate Change Alliance and Vista Library
Presentation by Jonathan Cole: Most efforts to combat climate change focus on reduction of carbon dioxide. However, the long lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere means that it could take decades for the benefit of emissions reductions to take effect. Reducing powerful but short-lived “super pollutants” (methane, black carbon and HFCs) could have an almost immediate effect on rising temperatures while we continue to reduce carbon dioxide for long-term climate stability. We’ll learn about efforts in California and worldwide to cut emissions of these dangerous pollutants, and the benefits of reductions for human health as well as the global climate.
Jonathan Cole has been teaching physics at Mira Costa College since 1984. He has been studying climate change for over twenty years, including research as a Visiting Scholar at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and graduate work in Scripps’ climate science program. He has been offering an introductory course in climate change at Mira Costa since 2014.
There will be time for questions from the audience and light refreshments will be served.

Call to Action if Trump Fires Mueller
March for Truth—an organization that is working with dozens of advocacy groups to organize rapid response protests has partnered with MoveOn.org, Public Citizen, Indivisible and many others to prepare emergency ‘Nobody is Above the Law‘ rallies that will happen directly following the firing of the special counsel should it occur. There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.
By firing Mueller or Rosenstein, the president would trigger a full-fledged constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The hours following the firing will determine whether he is proved right.

Thank you for the wise studied recommendations… all’s I think about every time another election comes around is “they voted for Hitler”… scary…US Amerika, the illiterate, with some misplaced nationalistic dream of past greatness ? on the brink of voting in other Hitlers, or did it already happen….? Not to worry, Hitler didn’t win, but it was a long bloody mess…and another couple of trillion dollars that we don’t have…. elections are being bought, but for what? For whom? If I knew the answer I would be sure to share it, like the SDFP… thank you again…
