SYRIAN DUST STORM
A cloud
is suffocating
the splintered island
Groves of umbrellas
folded into deserted beachfronts
smothered
by ashes of Armenian children
burned alive by the same state of repudiation
stabbing
unhealed wounds
It’s harvest time
in the Syrian Desert
Predators and Tornados
fanning ancient flames
Stirring dust into a storm
choking the Mediterranean
At airports
flights are cancelled due to poor visibility
A few planes manage to get off ground
deliver their cargoes of consumers
to cocktails of sun
and a shrinking oasis
fighting to hold onto blackouts
fueled
by the terrorism of free enterprise
founded on a mirage
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry. Ish, as he is known, has also written lyrics for German musicians Andrea Hörkens and Thomas Roderburg (Tender Art).
