John Lawrence and Judy Oliveira SDFP 2nd birthday party

John Lawrence and Judy Oliveira SDFP 2nd birthday party

San Diego Free Press readers are familiar with long time contributor John Lawrence.  He has written a Tuesday column ever since we launched in June of 2012.  We were saddened to learn that John recently lost his life partner Judy Oliveira.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, October 3 and John extends an invitation to the SDFP community to attend.

Memorial Service for Judy Oliveira
Saturday, October 3 at 11 o’clock
El Cajon Chapel of the Valley
1465 E Madison Ave, El Cajon, CA 92019
The Rev. Jim Seaton will preside.

Both Judy and John attended many Free Press gatherings until Judy began experiencing health problems.  Those of us who got to know Judy learned that she and John shared a love of jazz.  From the time they met two decades ago while they were living downtown until recently, they regularly attended clubs and events to enjoy live music and support San Diego jazz musicians.

Judy celebrated her 73rd birthday last November.  John arranged a beautiful party for her that included her favorite music–jazz of course– and pink decor.

Our deepest condolences to John.

      Dear John,
I graduated Sussex High School with you several years ago and appreciate your news articles. My marriage to Murray is “new” 22 years and he is my special partner.
I acknowledge how painful this loss is.
      Condolences,
      Sydell

Hi John, We were so sorry to hear of Judy’s passing. Our deepest condolences to you and to your families.

I knew Judy as you know through our mutual love of photography. I missed her posts on Flickr over recent months and felt when we last spoke on the telephone that she was not well.

We are thinking about you all at this sad time John.

John, I was so saddened to hear of Judy’s passing. I have been out of state but will be back late evening the 30th and will be there for Judy’s memorial service. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with. I hope you are doing okay, or at least as best as you can be without your Judy by your side. Please call if there is anything I can do to help. Pam Reilly

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
