January 21, 2017, was a historic day in San Diego – and around the nation and world – with the Women’s March. According to San Diego Police, the crowd in downtown San Diego at the rallies and the march down Broadway was 40,000 women, men, and children of all ages and all hues.
It was definitely one of the largest demonstrations in San Diego’s history – matched probably by the huge immigration march of nearly a decade ago.
Here are photos from yesterday’s march – taken by this reporter and by a number of friends who sent them to us.

thank you for this great slide show. Preserving history. Some day one of these pictures will be in a history book. Hugs from me.

That first wonderful photo by Lisa Mix is the very best photo of San Diego’s march published anywhere.
Sandy Parker says
Wondering why none of our local news agencies published any aerial
views of the San Diego March. Every other city published one. The first photo here and the video taken by those on the cruise ship are the only ones I have seen that shows the size of the crowd.
Kathy Przekopp says
I’m wondering that, as well! The cruise ship video certainly suggested between 40 & 60 thousand people involved! An aerial could give more data. I KNOW there were drones, what did their photos show?

Regarding the “Putin’s Puppet” photo, I’m not so sure that progressives should take the line of the establishment that a rapprochement with Russia, should one come about during the Trump administration, is necessarily a bad thing. I think the military-industrial complex is trumping up another Cold War with Russia which is entirely unnecessary and counterproductive. I think Russia and the US should be friends instead of the neocon blather that wants the world to stay exactly like it is with all the US traditional enemies securely in place.
Doug Porter says
Pol Pot, Idi Amin and Saddam Hussien all opposed US foreign policy; that doesn’t make them any less odious.
It’s possible and even a good idea to be opposed to the neo-con warmongering and the klepto-state. And there certainly is a shared history of both the US and Russia messing with other people’s elections. Pointing out that Putin played the Trump-card shouldn’t be taken as anything more than what it is: the chickens coming home to roost.
Jim Bliesner says
I agree with you John on detente with Russia even if it is for odious reasons. And it is the military industrial complex that loves to stoke that monster. Building a bridge with Russia will be necessary after he provokes hostilities with China and starts to inflame Asia.
Julie says
Russia has extremely homophobic laws, physical attacks on black people by ultra-nationalists are a daily occurrence and the duma is currently considering the decriminalization of domestic violence. If all that is acceptable to you, I am not sure how you define “progressive.” A detente with Russia means throwing queer folks, women and black people under the bus. Not the best way to build the anti-Trump coalition.

John, I have a master’s degree from Stanford University in Russian and East European Studies. I have been following developments in Russia alongside my highly informed specialists for many years. I will only say this (because there would be tomes to say, but it’s not appropriate in this comment section): for many years now Putin has wanted to “Make Russia Great Again” and defines this rather specifically to mean bringing back the wonderful days when Stalin ruled. He has gotten many many people in Russia to believe him. So I would suggest you study Stalin and the Soviet Union under Stalin to get your answers on whether the US should find a way to work with Stalin… I mean Putin, or not.

Oh go ahead… enlighten us, even if “it’s not appropriate in this comments section.” In fact you could contribute a longer article. See what people say about it, and so on.

A fascist Russia and new fascist America go hand in hand. Makes perfect sense to join forces to make fascism great again.

SO thrilled to see these awesome photos of our march! I was able to push my walker all the way around my block in solidarity! Seeing these images is pure joy ! From a devout 60’s civil rights activist–we are finally global!
Rosa says
I was amazed to see the original civil rights activists standing next to me. I was humbled and awed.my favorite sign was, “I’m 91 and I can’t believe I’m still marching for women’s rights. Proud to be part of this 7 continent protest.
