The SDFP is switching gears from National Poetry Month to National Bike Month. There are several events throughout the month of May for avid and amateur cyclists alike. If you know of an event not listed below, please add it in the comment section.
May 7 (Today): National Bike to School Day
This is pretty self-explanatory. Be on the lookout for kids of all ages riding their bikes in the morning and afternoon, and help by sharing the road.
May 10: Bike Fiesta
This event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Diego Central Library. Attendees can take part in a bike commuting class, listen to the topics discussed by a women’s cycling panel, or get a bike tune up — which will come in handy for Bike to Work Day the following week.
May 11: CycloFemme
A grassroots organization, CycloFemme banded to join people of all ages, gender and ethnicities on a single ride each Mother’s Day to share their love for cycling.

May 14: Celebrate Bike Month with Dinner and Bikes
Elly Blue, author of Bikenomics: How Bicycling Can Save the Economy, Joe Biel, the maker of the documentary Aftermass: Bicycling in a Post-Critical Mass Portland, and traveling vegan chef Joshua Ploeg will join forces to celebrate National Bike Month.
This event will be held at La Bodega Studio and Gallery and will feature a pre-dinner bike ride before a presentation of short videos and a slideshow about the bicycle culture, activism and the economy.

May 16: Bike to Work Day
Also self-explanatory.
May 17: San Diego River Bike Ride
This event mixes a family fun ride with information regarding the development of the San Diego River Trail, which will initially span from Ocean Beach to East County. In addition to their bikes and helmets, attendees are encouraged to bring sunscreen, appropriate footwear and drinking water.
The event runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and starts at the bike path by Dog Beach in OB. You can RSVP here.
May 21: Ride of Silence
This event is designed to commemorate cyclists who have lost their lives on public roads, in addition to raising awareness about the dangers involved and offering key elements of bicycling safety.

May 30: Bicycle Traffic Skills Course
Hosted by the City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation Division and the San Diego Bicycle Coalition, this course offers the skills necessary to be a safer cyclist. The course provides information about the proper bike and helmet fit, safety tips for riding in traffic, techniques for navigating road hazards, emergency maneuvers, using public transit as a cyclist and your legal rights and responsibilities.
The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be held at 300 N. Coast Highway.
May 31: Member Mixer Picnic
This social gathering is geared toward members of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, but everyone is welcome to attend. Held at Crown Point Park, which is located at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Crown Point Drive, the event will begin at 11 a.m. Make sure to bring your own picnic basket.
May 31: San Diego Century Bicycle Tour
The 8th annual San Diego Century Bicycle Tour will be held in Encinitas and features four courses with options to ride 20, 33, 67 or 105 miles. There’s everything from a coastal route to an inland climb depending on your cycling ability.
