A Face in the Desert
People come to the desert
because it’s possible to disappear
in unobstructed light
Wind blows them into canyons
until all that remains is swept up
by frozen lava flows
rippling from dunes
Occasionally hikers
stumble upon a few relics
flooded out of wash
An angelic face peering through sand
in the form of a Belgian passport
An accompanying notebook:
the unknown gospel
of Sonoran Desert
desperate for flesh and blood
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry. Ish, as he is known, has also written lyrics for German musicians Andrea Hörkens and Thomas Roderburg (Tender Art).
