Please, step around the debris as we remodel the place.drivethru

Google tells us we need to be more responsive to our mobile customers so we are adding the drive-thru window. I have been sitting in my desk chair 18 of the last 30 hours. Thanks, Frank, for feeding me and making me get out into the sun.

This has been a challenging process. There are hundreds of elements that go into a webpage and they all have to be looked at. We wanted the desktop version of the site to look like it always did, as much as possible, anyway. We didn’t want to scare away the curmudgeons while trying to lure in the whipper-snappers.

Things to do (will be crossed off as they get done) in no particular order:

  1. Get the share buttons to display
  2. Add the Read More link to the homepage blurbs
  3. Redo the logo – possible center and float to left as window resizes. Better but not done.
  4. Pagination at the bottom of the home page
  5. Unsquish the avatars in the Recent Comment area in the sidebar (only seems to be a problem in Chrome)
  6. Fix the overlap in the tabs of the Author Box
  7. Adjust the text size. Anna commented that the headlines were super sized for the hard of hearing. How do feel about the volume, dear reader?
  8. Fix the Facebook opengraph meta.
  9. White space around header in mobile.
  10. Allow larger images in homepage preview.
  11. Fix the mobile menus and navigation.
  12. Style pullquotes.

Please add your thoughts in the comment section. If you have an issue with how something displays on your end let me know what browser and platform you are using. Chrome on Windows or Firefox on Android?

Oh, and drop some spare change in the tip jar. It’s the black and white Donate button floating around here, somewhere…

Patty, I use Chrome on a Vista OS and I’ve never had a case of avatars looking other than OK; no squishing or elongation of any kind.
    Hope that helps.

For me, using chrome on Win7 desktop and on my samsung android phone the avatars are squished. on Firefox and IE there are not. Hm.

Oh, you’re referring to how it displays on a MOBILE device.
    Sorry; nevermind.

BUT, I would like to ask for comments that can be edited, like VoSD has. I think it would improve the comments section — which is very popular.

I will look into it. We had that at the OB Rag a long time ago, when we were on a small server and code was clunkier and it about shut our poor server down. Maybe now it might work out.

I don’t have mobile. Is there a world for me that sports a full page with all those used-to-be’s like
highlights, important recent articles, list of recent comments? And what’s with this naked nerd-font
    at the bottom:
You may use these HTML tags and attributes:

Hiya Bob. I think most of what you are looking for is back. The naked nerd stuff will go, I do’t much care for it, either. But it’s built in and I need to strip out the code that makes it show up. It’s so low on my list it’s not even on the list…

Thursday morning and it’s looking better every day, at least on my desktop ‘puter. The banner area at the top still needs improvement.

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
