Every woman I have contact with in any way, at my home, on the phone, on social or mass media, had a visceral reaction to the Republicans’ misogyny-fest on Capitol Hill this past week, also known as the judicial confirmation process. Tears, fears, rage, and physical reactions are the norm, not the exception.
I’m not about to write about the details of Senate spectacle of a bunch of old men sending a message that women don’t matter. It just makes me incoherently angry. Besides, I’m not so sure words from me are what’s needed right now.
I do believe a line has been crossed. We have an obligation to make this upcoming election a statement. It is already the year of the woman in terms of candidates for elected office. Now we all need to make sure it’s the year that women’s voices driving voter turnout.
I hope I’m right. There are more than two dozen events in this week’s Activist Calendar for your consideration. If you haven’t already volunteered for a campaign or get out the vote effort, now is the time to make a commitment.
San Diego Indivisible Downtown is meeting on Sunday; there will be opportunities to meet endorsed candidates and sign up to volunteer. The League of Women Voters is having two forums. All kinds of campaigns are sponsoring walks, postcard writing sessions, and phone-banking. PRO TIP: The “down-ballot” campaigns are just as important as the marquee contests.

Political insiders are predicting that more women on the ballot this year will lead women to turn out to the polls in droves this November. That’s to say nothing of the galvanizing effect of Judge Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford; #MeToo and #WeSaidEnough; Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, women’s marches and two years into the tenure of a president whom California women disapprove of by a gaping 34 percentage point margin.
According to the Target Book Insider Track Survey, which queries the consultants, lobbyists and political players who shape California politics from both sides of the aisle, 73 percent of respondents said they expect women to be the demographic group with the largest bump in turnout this year.
Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.
Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

This is going to be a big meeting for our chapter. We need YOU to come and share your input as we endorse candidates for the midterms.
Our team is hard at work creating another voter’s guide for the November midterms. Just like in the primaries, we’re putting together research and insights on the candidates and measures that will appear on your ballot.
Educating voters is important. However, these midterm elections are a big deal, and we want to go beyond individual votes. Endorsing candidates in and channeling our efforts in the form of neighborhood canvassing, phone/text banking or other volunteer opportunities for their campaigns can help protect or flip critical districts.
At the September 30th meeting, we will present a list of proposed races that we would like to consider for endorsement. We will explain the process of how we selected that list, in the context of the values we constructed as a chapter over the past year. We will clarify how an endorsement from SDID will translate into action… and how YOU will be involved in that process. Finally, and most importantly, we will ask for your input on which candidates we as a chapter should endorse.
