Every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park is the site of a free organ concert, performed by Dr. Carol Williams, the San Diego Civic Organist since 2001.
The organ contains 4,530 pipes and was a gift to the city from John and Adolph Spreckels. The weekly free concerts have been a part of San Diego tradition since 1917 and despite financial concerns in recent years this long-standing concert series continues on to the benefit of residents and visitors alike.
As the days grow shorter and temperatures across much of the country approach – and in many areas head well below freezing – the opportunity to spend an afternoon in the sun accompanied by soothing music is a good reminder of how blessed San Diegans are in the weather department.
Whether you are seated in the pavilion or strolling elsewhere in the park during a concert you’ll surely hear the organ if it is playing. The music adds a unique and enjoyable dimension to a visit. Hopefully the Sunday concert tradition will continue for many years and generations to come.
Have a great weekend (and Thanksgiving holiday)!
