Field of View: A Cloudy Day at Dog Beach

It’s been chilly at Dog Beach lately, but the pups don’t seem to mind. Located at the end of Voltaire Street in Ocean Beach, Dog Beach offers a place for the pooches to unwind, socialize and get their feet wet all at the same time.

I’ve only recently felt comfortable taking my dogs off leash in public and, because the shoreline is set so far back from the chaos of the street, this has been a relaxing place to practice my recall and other techniques. You can go for a walk along the beach or the river depending on whether you want to be right in the middle of all the action or not.

One thing I’ve noticed taking my dogs on walks through the neighborhood is the unabashed judgement you get from other owners when you’re dog has the audacity to bark. I have yet to experience that at Dog Beach. Some dogs are perfectly behaved; others a little more … high-strung, shall we say. But as long as your dog isn’t violent, you’re welcome.

  • It turned out all right in the end.

I walked for about an hour today along the ocean and dog beach and I saw a lot of happy perros. It was cloudy and then it got somewhat sunny as I walked but it was a nice day any way you look at it. I wish I had run into you.

Annie- you captured what I call a “mother of pearl” kind of day, when you feel as if you are tucked inside of a sea shell. Sea and sky meet dreamily and seamlessly. The dogs go about being dogs, “dichoso en su estar” — happy in their being.

Ernie, it would have been a pleasure running into you. I hope you are well.

Anna, yes. The happiness there is palpable – for the pups and the people.
