The London Olympic Games ended last August and the next Olympics in Sochi, Russia won’t begin until February 2014 but here in San Diego we have a local facility to scratch your itch for all things Olympic-related: a U.S. Olympic Training Center. Located in Chula Vista this center is home to resident programs in archery, BMX, women’s field hockey, men’s rowing, men’s and women’s rugby (7s), and track and field. There are also facilities for soccer, tennis, cycling, volleyball, and softball.

In addition to resident programs there are various short-term programs the center hosts in a variety of sports. The Olympic Voice is the newsletter for the training center and includes information on resident athletes and other center and general sports information.

The Visitor Center is open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily and is the starting point for the self-guided tour which has 6 audio tour stops along the mile-long path. The Visitor Center also houses the BMX Hall of Fame and the Team USA Shop if you’re looking for a souvenir of your visit.

Additionally, if you are in the South Bay this Saturday the implosion of the South Bay Power Plant is scheduled for Saturday, February 2nd at 7 AM. The implosion is expected to take less than two minutes and is something you certainly can’t see everyday. For more information on parking and suggested viewing areas check out the Port of San Diego page on the implosion. The implosion is part of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan which intends to create a world-class destination on the bay in Chula Vista.
