I Am Not Charlie
Holding up pens
won’t stop the human race
from running into fountains of blood
We must put down swords
before picking up quills
read
between lines
drawn in sand
Expose
the invisible ink
spray painted on blank slates
erase script forged for mass hysteria
connect dots
Free speech
from doublespeak
right
what was wronged in our own hand
Punctuate sentences
with space
for understanding
Practice what we conjugate
in the present tense
lest we turn another blind page
on the terror of poverty
close the book
on liberty, fraternity, and economic equality for all
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry. Ish, as he is known, has also written lyrics for German musicians Andrea Hörkens and Thomas Roderburg (Tender Art).
