What Happened In The South Bay This Week?

- The strip club in Chula Vista, Eye Candy Showgirls closed its doors after a judged ruled to shut it down.
- The Times of San Diego reported that construction is underway in Eastern Chula Vista of the Millenia Project, set to add 3,000 residences, 2 million square feet of office space, 1.5 million square feet of retain and six urban parks.
- The first same-sex couple in Tijuana got married this week.
- More activity at the San Ysidro School District. Arturo Sanchez-Macias became the new chief financial officer after their CFO resigned last week. District trustees will also appoint a new member of the board, after Jose Barajas resigned. However, at the last district meeting, a community member additionally demanded that another trustee resign.
- On September 1st Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina hosted the Rosarito Mayor Silvano Abarca to a Friendship Agreement Ceremony. The agreement symbolized the importance of our transnational metropolis. Mayor Abarca said, “We don’t believe in walls but in bridges, in partnerships. We create more opportunities working together.”
- Mexican Human Rights advocate, Father Alejandro Solalinde, traveled to Tijuana and discussed Mexican government human rights violations at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
- On August 21st, Sweetwater Authority held a meeting to allow customers of the water agency to protect its water rate hike. Tier one residents will see a 38% increase, according to the water district.
- It’s Tijuana River Action Month. Volunteers can restore the Tijuana River through coastal cleanups, butterfly garden planting and other activities in September & October. Check here to register for events or here to find out more about the organization.
- SANDAG has created an interactive story map of the Bayshore Bikeway. The Bayshore Bikeway will eventually extend 24 miles around San Diego Bay. Approximately 15 miles have been built to date, and plans are underway to construct the entire bikeway as a bike path separated from street traffic. The next phase of construction is anticipated to begin in 2016, and will close the gap between the bike path at Pier 32 in National City and the existing bike path south of 32nd Street in San Diego. The Barrio Logan segment of the bikeway, which goes north from 32nd Street to Park Boulevard, is entering the design phase.
- The Front Art Gallery opened its new exhibit on Thursday called “Looming” by Ivan Abreu.
