Two Arizona congressional representatives are angry that President Barack Obama has intervened to prevent sacred Apache land from being sold off to foreign business interests, according to Tucson Weekly.
Republican Congressman Paul Gosar had joined forces with Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in an effort to sell off the ancestral Native American land, known as Oak Flat or Chi’chil Bildagoteel to the Apache community, to mining firm Resolution Copper, owned by an Australian-British corporation. According to the New York Times, it would have been the first time in history Native American lands would have been handed over to a foreign company by Congress.
The land was set to be handed over due to last-minute language added to a must-pass military spending bill. But according to the Weekly, the Obama administration prevented that from happening. The site has long been used for Apache coming-of-age ceremonies, particularly for girls.

God bless Pres. Obama.
Good to see POTUS put on his war paint.
This is why I will vote for the Democratic nominee for president in 2016 whether it be Bernie or Hillary.
You guys should probably check your facts better. First, it’s not Native American land. It was federal land being managed by the Forrest Service. Some factions of the nearby Apache Tribe have made claims that it is sacred. However an exhaustive search by the BLM found no archeological evidence of any past inhabitations. Sacred lands are also enshrined by the Apache people in oral traditions. This area has none of the special names, songs, or stories that really are the only the definition of sacred places for the Apache people.
After everything that has been taken from the Natives in their history, if they say an unoccupied piece of land is sacred, that is good enough for me.
Yours is a distinction without a difference since all federal land once was native American land & this land is our land, not some foreign corporation’s. Let the Apaches not have to fight no more forever, especially against invaders from abroad & their American running dogs.
How unethical we need to change our laws
We’ve taken enough from native Americans. Shame on John McCain for trying to do this. Wonder what his compensation was. Glad to see Obama did the right thing for a change.
