“One of the players should beat you to death with their hockey stick like the whore you are.”

By Abby Zimet / Common Dreams

In an often hateful and misogynistic culture, there’s likely not much worse than the mindless, profane, violent venom regularly spewed at women sportscasters by male online bullies with issues they clearly haven’t addressed and keyboards they clearly feel they can hide behind so they don’t have to.

Having had enough, two Chicago-based female sports journalists launched #MoreThanMean, a stunningly pointed and pained PSA wherein discomfited regular guys — not the Tweets’ authors and mostly friends of the video’s producers — read actual Tweets out loud to them. Produced by Just Not Sports and posted Tuesday, the video places the men across from Julie DiCaro, a radio host and Sports Illustrated reporter, and Sarah Spain, an espnW reporter and ESPN Radio host.

As the men read – and the tweets get more grotesque – they grow increasingly, poignantly distressed, often pausing, cringing, shaking their horrified heads or whispering stricken apologies after actually reading out loud things like, “Hopefully, this skank Julie DiCaro is Bill Cosby’s next victim.”

Other samples: “I hope your boyfriend beats you,” “This is why we don’t hire any females unless we need our cock sucked or our food cooked,” “You need to be hit in the head with a hockey puck and killed,” and the ever-popular, “Fuck this cunt.” (After one guy shamefacedly prefaces it with, “There’s a c-word in here,” Spain wearily responds, “Yeah, there are a lot of c-words.”)

This kind of harassment, says another female sportscaster, is “my every day.” #MoreThanMean says it has to stop. “We wouldn’t say it to their faces,” it ends. “So lets not type it.” Watch.
