“Bannering” against upcoming airshow on August 18
By San Diego Veterans for Peace
Each year, San Diego hosts the giant Miramar Air Show, which is attended by up to 500,000 people. This air show is typical of many other air shows around the country in that it attempts to glorify and glamorize war and militarism, as well as being an excellent opportunity for defense contractors and the overall military industrial complex to sell products which lead to the deaths and injuries of so many people on earth.
The San Diego Veterans For Peace, with veteran members of all five services, is opposed to these “war shows” and is asking the public to stay home and to provide more wholesome entertainment to their children and families than the Miramar Air Show provides.
The Miramar Air Show:
- Glorifies war with an exciting and colorful show of speed, power and noise.
- Celebrates the skills and machinery that exist to kill, maim and destroy.
- Misuses taxpayer’s money for entertainment and defense industry marketing and sales.
- Is dangerous – 10% of Blue Angel’s pilots have been killed in accidents. Miramar jets have already crashed in San Diego neighborhoods.
- Serves as a misleading recruiting tool for our unsuspecting youth.
Over the next 5 years San Diego Veterans for Peace intend to encourage the public to recognize their exposure to skillful propaganda and eventually lose interest in the Miramar Air Show.
We will work to steer the public to resist attending … in sufficient numbers to make the show not worth the time, effort, risk and expense.
Our goal is to effectively shut down the Miramar Air Show due to non-participation.
I’m so glad you’re doing this. This is an advertisement for militarism as you point out and a waste of taxpayer money.
Thanks to the vets protesting the glorification of murder.
Thank U VFP we need your perspective!
BRAVO! I applaud this piece of sanity. I’m tired of the military industrial complex that glorifies war while wasting tax dollars and paying for the politicians who see killing as a justifiable means to an illusionary end.
Let’s put and end to military airshows once and for all.
San Diego Veterans For Peace are a great group of people and need to be celebrated!
I am an Army Vietnam combat veteran. The air show is a good recruiting tool. It is also shows vintage aircraft. I could go on but those so called veterans need to get a life!!!
So every veteran who comes out of the experience with a viewpoint different than yours needs to get a life?
Phil,
How are they so
San Diego VFP member Dave Patterson joined us up here in Washington State for our annual Hiroshima/Nagasaki weekend of remembrance and action. He shared the good work that San Diego VFP is doing, in particular the campaign against the Miramar Air Show. Great campaign; thanks to San Diego VFP!
I don’t know if I need a life but the military spending in our country is so inconsistent with our needs it is ridiculous. Who exactly are we defending ourselves against? Is that new aircraft carrier going to make us safe from…Syria? Iraq? Our defense spending is like our health care spending, approximately double what it should be. In fact we could cut more than half of defense and still be safe. We couldn’t do all of these unnecessary wars with that budget, but hey, maybe that’s a good thing. Not fighting unnecessary wars. It is nice to see these magnificent machines in action but it just shows how unnecessary they are when you think about who we are actually defending ourself against. No one. A huge waste that benefits a few at the cost of many.
Most of the victims of wars these days are innocent poor women and children so I guess that’s who we are defending ourselves against.
