EATING THE WORM
-for Señor Trump
Señor Trump shouldn’t drink Mezcal
Because the gusano
is an arduous laborer
with an appetite for politician’s brains
which explains
the wall his party
hallucinates around Mexico
When the metamorphosis
of worm into moth is complete
Insect Trump might laugh at his mythological proposition
considering Aztlán
has already erupted from the ashes
of America’s nightmare
Notes:
Gusano: The caterpillar found in some bottles of Mezcal.
Aztlán: The legendary homeland of the Aztecs.
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry.
