Progressive Calendar for San Diego, November 25- December 4

calendar-idea-1bBy Doug Porter

Responses to the election results continue to dominate activist actions in San Diego in the coming weeks. There are also strikes, a union-sponsored diaper drive, and a critical hearing on the racial profiling practices of the San Diego Police Department.

The City of San Diego released a long-awaited report on the SDPD late on Wednesday afternoon right before Thanksgiving.  Of course, most folks were already on their way to other events. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

It would also appear that city officials “concerns” about the report contributed to a delay in its release. Joshua Chanin, the lead researcher, did not return phone messages and emails from the media asking about those concerns.

SDPD BadgeFrom the Union-Tribune:

Councilwoman Emerald, the chair of that committee, said the timing of the report’s release was frustrating.

“We get this a lot — things dumped in the afternoon before a weekend or a holiday when people are heading out of the office and just after they’ve checked their emails for the last time of the day,” she said, suggesting that Mayor Kevin Faulconer wanted to minimize comment on the report and control discussion of it.

Towards the end of this column, you’ll find a listing of international and nationwide anti-Trump events, both for the coming week and on inauguration weekend

Resist Trump, Build a United Progressive Social Justice Coalition

Monday, November 28, 7pm
Grassroots Oasis
3130 Moore Street
For More Information

time-to-resistThe election of Donald Trump is a nightmare. Unchecked he will lead the US down the road to fascism, environmental catastrophe, and enact terrible racist policies that will destroy millions of families. While many believe that our people of color communities are in the most immediate danger, everyone in the “99%” has a reason to Resist and Reject the policies and the symbolism of a Donald Trump presidency.

We have a power and a responsibility to take a stand against this regime…together. All modern successful movements for social justice have had a loud and clear demand from organized people in the streets. We must begin now to make the case that Trump has NO mandate and his powers to enact a disastrous regime must be made void.

We gather on Monday to begin the steps toward a broad and energizing demonstration to be held on Jan 20th, Inauguration Day, but we also gather to begin building a historic and uniquely powerful brotherhood and sisterhood of people uniting for a just society.

Join Us, we are calling for all individuals and group representatives who are interested in building this event and the movement to Resist and Reject Donald Trump.

While this meeting is being hosted by Activist San Diego and the San Diego Green Party, several groups, namely the Answer Coalition and Union del Barrio, have initiated activities for a Jan 20th demonstration already. We want to respect their initiative and welcome them as primary contributors to this action. We know we are stronger together, lets unify on this important effort.

Transportation Notes: The Grassroots Oasis is @ 3130 Moore Street, five blocks from the Old Town transit center From the East its second Right from Pacific Highway, a block and a half NW from Rosecrans, and two half-blocks SE from Camino Del Rio W from Hwy 8W. There is lots of street parking.

Organized by ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties
For More Information

SDPD BadgeAt last month’s Public Safety & Livable Neighborhoods committee hearing, scores of people heard what we all knew to be true:

The San Diego Police Department treats drivers differently based on race.

While we were promised the report on traffic stop cards was to be released at the October meeting, the Mayor’s office only released a snapshot of the report to the community. This is not full transparency.

Transparency matters in building community trust. Come join us at the next PS&LN meeting on November 30, 2016 where they are scheduled to release the FULL report.

On This Day: 1883 – Some 10,000 New Orleans workers, Black and White, participated in a solidarity parade of unions comprising the Central Trades and Labor Assembly. The parade was so successful it was repeated the following two years. 1947 – Movie studio executives meeting in New York agreed to blacklist the “Hollywood 10,” who were cited a day earlier and jailed for contempt of Congress when they failed to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee. 1984 – Several British and American stars got together as Band-Aid, and recorded “Do They Know It’s Christmas”. The project was planned by Bob Geldof. The proceeds of the record went to Ethiopian famine relief.

In Escondido, our local newspaper Escondido Times Advocate published my Letter to Editor 11 24 16, “Community Concerns Arise about Downtown Desalination Plant”. If possible, I’d like to see if wider media coverage could be focused on this utility infrastructure topic, and how neighborhoods in Escondido want to be active participants in government decision-making process in Escondido. I’m not sure if your media usually covers north San Diego communities, but many readers hope for that, (or wish it did). I don’t know how to ‘attach’ the Escondido T.A. digital files to this message if you’re interested, but if you send me an email message I could attach the digital file. Residents in neighborhoods near Ash Street and Washington Avenue have already identified credible concerns, and are trying to expand ‘public awareness’, so more members of community in Escondido can have their voices heard. The target date for Planning Commission consideration on Conditional Use Permit (CUP) is December 13, 2016, so any and all advance media coverage would be greatly appreciated. fyi my phone is 760 580 7046 if you have questions. Many thanks
