Black History

Or, As the World Spins, Day 12

By Doug Porter

I’m suffering from Post Traumatic Trump Disorder.

News roundup logoJon Stewart called what’s going on “vicious chaos” recently and I have to agree. So today’s column is just a list of all things I wish I could write about but can’t figure out which one is most deserving.

So, since I last looked, the President of the United States has:

*Made a fool of himself at a photo op Black History Month meeting by alluding to Frederick Douglass as if he were still alive. And praising Fox News.

*Made the decision to eliminate federal law enforcement targeting of white supremacist groups.

*Announced that it’s ok for US companies to obtain licenses and approvals from FSB (spy agency) to import certain software and IT equipment containing encryption into Russia.

*Threatened the President of Mexico with US troops.

*Ranted at (and hung up on) the Prime Minister of Australia over a refugee resettlement agreement, along with proving beyond a doubt the term “illegals” is code for brown people.

*Threatened funding for the University of California after a speech by a right wing extremist was canceled despite police from nine different agencies being called in by the college.

*Threatened Iran. With tweets sent at 3:30am  and a vaguely worded ‘you’re on notice’

*Went before the National Prayer Breakfast and talked about ratings for the Apprentice.

*He also used that appearance to say he would overturn a law restricting political speech by churches.

I’ve also learned:

*40% of voters favor impeachment of Trump in a new Public Policy Polling survey.

* The US Navy Seal, 8 year old American girl and dozen odd Yemeni civilian casualties in the first Trump approved military action occurred in an operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup.

*After trying everything else, many Democrats are starting to listen to voters. What a concept!

If we’re voting on which of the Glorious Leader’s mistakes most need attacking I’ll ask for more coverage of the invitation to fundamentalists to invade and overthrow the federal government. Betsy DeVos, the nominee for Education Secretary. is the sister of Eric Prince, who formed Blackwater and made fistfuls of cash off that Christian militia when it became the supplier of 1 in 10 fighters in Iraq. (Blackwater, by Jeremy Scahill, best seller 10 years ago. Let’s remember that in the 90s Christian fundamentalists had a plan to take over the officer corps of the armed services. They still want to repeal Roe vs. Wade. This is a coup, folks, and the battle to keep church and state separated will be a very long one. When FOX removes The Con from the White House (by offering him his own primetime show on that network) we’ll still have to face Mike Pence, the putative vice-president, and all those true believers in the Senate and House.

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
