San Diego is becoming an activist powerhouse. Major local actions in the period covered by this calendar include Saturday’s OB March 4 Impeachment, and activities centered around A Day Without a Woman, on Wednesday, March 8. There are Townhalls, Teach-Ins, Art Shows, and Fundraisers.
So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement and a few reading suggestions.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.
You can now subscribe to the weekly Progressive Calendar. It’s free and we don’t share email addresses with anybody. Scroll down to the end of this column for the link.

Jones was a leading member of the famed Georgia Sea Island Singers. That group featured the original form and content of early African traditions in America. As a pre-jazz, blues, and Gospel form, it combined all elements of life (work, play and praise) filled with recrimination, power, and struggle. The group’s music was a primary force in many of the Civil Rights and later Black Power legacy chants which grew from the March on Washington 1963. Instruments will be provided.

A Day Without a Woman
A Message From: The Women’s March on Washington
On International Women’s Day, March 8th, women and our allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity.
In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women’s March, we join together in making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice.
Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:
- Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
- Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
- Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman
A Day Without a Woman reaffirms our commitment to the Principles of Unity, which were collaboratively outlined for the Women’s March. We are inspired by recent courageous actions like the “Bodega strike” lead by Yemeni immigrant store owners in New York City and the Day Without Immigrants across the U.S. We applaud the efforts of #GrabYourWallet and others to bring public accountability to unethical corporate practices. The Women’s March stands in solidarity with the International Women’s Strike organizers, feminists of color and grassroots groups in planning global actions for equity, justice and human rights.
When millions of us stood together in January, we saw clearly that our army of love greatly outnumbers that of fear, greed and hatred. Let’s raise our voices together again, to say that women’s rights are human rights, regardless of a woman’s race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, sexual identity, gender expression, economic status, age or disability.
A Day Without a Woman Strike San Diego
Let’s not forget that we stand on the shoulders of many before us, farm workers, teachers, low wage workers, fast food workers – not always the most privileged but the most principled have engaged in strikes including our immigrant sisters and brothers last week to stand for what we believe in. You will not ignore our value and contributions. #womensmarch

For More Information
Now more than ever our communities are engaged and ready to be politically involved. The New Narrative hosts a special panel discussion with local leaders to share their knowledge and insight on political advocacy and working for change on a local level. We’ll talk about what advocacy is, how it works and how we all can get involved.
This will be a social event with time devoted to meeting one another and making new connections too. The hope is that concerned citizens will continue to find coalitions and we can all leave the event with a stronger idea of how we can make a direct difference in our world. $5 suggested donation

March For Science (April 22)
The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The politicization of science, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. On April 22, 2017 hundreds of thousands of people will walk out of their lab coats and into the streets of Washington.

National People’s Climate March (April 29)
The Sierra Club and other environmental organizations have announced demonstrations in Washington DC and other cities for April 29, the 99th day of the Trump administration.
SanDiego350 is the lead organizer locally, with many partners including Sierra Club San Diego, Labor Council, Climate Action Campaign, Fight for $15, Greenpeace.
“The People’s Climate March will take place on Saturday, April 29th. Thousands of San Diegans will march in unity with the massive march in Washington, D.C. and sister marches across the country. Near the 100th day of this administration and facing the threat of a President who denies the reality of climate change, we will stand together and take action. We will march for our air, our water, and our land. We will march for clean energy jobs and climate justice. We will march for healthy communities and for the people we love. We will march for our freedom to live, survive and thrive. And we will be louder and stronger than ever before.”
