President Trump is lumbering towards the hundred day mark as I’m writing this, desperate to be seen as doing something, anything. The latest scheme is to try and horsetrade funding for the wall in return for not throwing a bunch of poor people’s healthcare away.
It won’t work, but not for lack of trying. Thanks to massive and ongoing resistance, the deal he’s offering is a non-starter for much of the Congress.
There are lots of local things to check out this week, and I urge you to think both globally and locally.
So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement and a few reading suggestions.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.
You can now subscribe to the weekly Progressive Calendar. It’s free and we don’t share email addresses with anybody. Scroll down to the end of this column for the link.

This “Mother of All Bombs (MOAB)” was deployed in the Nangahar Province. This bombing is not random, it used Afghanistan as a testing ground to flex the power of American militarism to invoke fear and domination. We have to stand up, it is our responsibility to name and condemn this violence done by the United States government. Stand against militarism, stand against occupation, stand against more war and blood.

We’ll also discuss the practical applications of storytelling; whether for PR/marketing, group cohesion, and shaping political narratives. This will be a participatory workshop so bring something to write with and be ready to share!
Armenian Genocide Commemoration: Stain of Denial
Monday, April 24, 10am
SDSU Hepner Hall
5500 Campanile Drive
For More Information
Every year on April 24th, Armenians around the world commemorate the genocide that began in 1915. Between 1915 and 1923, at least 1.5 million Armenians were killed or died during deporations/death marches into the desert. Turkey, the country that was born out of the Ottoman Empire, denies the scope and intent behind the killings, although independent historians agree that what ensued was genocide. It is illegal in Turkey to discuss what happened to the Armenian people, who live almost entirely in a diaspora today with no sense of justice.
We are silently protesting the policy of denial by Turkey and call upon the Turkish government to recognize and come to terms with its history. We also call upon the United States government to use the term “genocide,” despite heavy pressure from Turkey not to. Until we fully acknowledge the atrocities of the past, victims’ descendants continue to suffer and the sad cycle of genocide repeats itself.
Please join us in solidarity on Monday, April 24th, in front of Hepner Hall at SDSU between 10am-2pm. We will put red tape on our mouths and hold signs in silent protest.

About Denim Day: For the past 18 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Learn more at denimdayinfo.org

Was the attack on Syria a heart felt response by Trump or a warning to the Chinese Government?
Since the bombing, the Russian, Syrian, and Iranian governments have taken further measures to demonstrate to the U.S. that they will not be bullied into submission, including Russian warships crossing into the Mediterranean Sea and moving toward the U.S. ships that launched the attack, Syria firing on U.S. planes, etc.
As we are brought to the edge of global conflict in the Middle East the U.S. further sent its Pacific Fleet straight to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea with a Chinese reply of 150,000 troops stationed along Korea’s northern border.
Are all of those on the so called “left” united on these issues? Are all socialists opposed to U.S. intervention? What is U.S. Imperialism and how do we oppose it? Get these and other questions answered as we work to build a strong understanding of these issues to prepare for what is to be done.

SANCTUARY CAMPUS-We demand that all immigration enforcement including ICE, US Border Protection, and the Department of Homeland Security be barred from campus, and that absolutely no cooperation shall be offered to any of these agencies by the campus administration or law enforcement.
CAMPUS LIVING WAGE-We demand that the minimum wage on campus be raised to $15.00 per hour, a living wage. The minimum wage on campus should then be indexed to inflation.
NO TUITION HIKE-We demand that the recent tuition increase approved by the CSU Board of Trustees be reversed, and to find ways to reduce tuition costs for all students. The CSU should not be passing budget shortfalls onto the students, many of whom need to work to support their education.
Other Stuff to Do
Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
