Memorial Day Veterans Day

San Diego Veterans for Peace Hometown Arlington West Memorial

By Jack Doxey/ San Diego Veterans for Peace

Chapter veterans from all five services will be honoring our 300+ fallen brothers and sisters from Southern California who have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with special memorial markers. WHO: Chapter members and friends of the San Diego Veterans For Peace, the local San Diego chapter of the national Veterans For Peace organization, a national 501-C-3 veterans educational organization.

WHERE: Lawn in front of the USS Midway Museum, 910 Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101

WHEN: Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, 2017 from 8 AM to 5 PM

As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict it is nice to see the country rally around its’ kids going to war for them. It is also sad to see these same kids going to fight people that are no threat to us and could never be on a battle field. We’re involved in a political war being fought with weapons against enemies with no chance of defeating us but bleeding us forever because they can’t be voted out of office. Sound familiar? It should. It is exactly like the Vietnam War with different geography and languages. No end in sight and no political will to end it because as usual, the people paying the biggest price aren’t making the decisions. The minute the wealthy could no longer avoid service in Vietnam guess what? They called it off. So maybe there’s the lesson. National service for all males between 18 and 30 and no dodging the military. Same deal for women. You’d be shocked at how fast this war ended and how long it would be before the next one. I remember after the first lottery and these guys with college degrees started showing up in the Marines because we had a 2 year enlistment plan and they couldn’t dodge anymore. The shooting stopped shortly thereafter and the POW’s came home a year later. If that’s what it takes to end these wars let’s do it. Donald Trump wouldn’t be so eager to invade Iran if Jared had to go in uniform with the infantry.

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
