By Doug Porter
If you’re poor and dying of cancer, console yourself with the thought that rich people will pay less taxes under the American Health Care Act. Oh, and the tax cut is retroactive, in case you have any questions about the true nature of what Republicans are up to.
If you believe in the electoral process, there isn’t much of a window left to save it. As stories in the Washington Post and elsewhere demonstrate, Russian influence in the 2016 election was a) ordered by Putin, b) more widespread than previously realized, and c) just a precursor to what we can expect in coming years.
What’s coming is the destruction (and privatization) of natural resources, education, and the nation’s infrastructure, along with an erosion of rights and protections for most of us. But, don’t worry, there’ll be good times on Wall Street.
It should be obvious by now that many of the checks and balances both in and out of government have been disabled. The deification of the dollar and the degradation of the commons are keys to understanding the deal in progress.
There are few short-term options available to stem the tide of gluttony threatening the future for most people in this country. Protest movements need to put down roots, finding ways to address immediate needs while building a political infrastructure for the long haul.
Having said this, we at San Diego Free Press want to offer up our endorsement and support for the upcoming Impeachment March in San Diego on Sunday, July 2nd. UPDATE: And the sister rally in Escondido.
But what about Vice President Mike Pence? Let’s take one step at a time, folks. Plus, I hear a rumor it’s possible to walk and chew gum at the same time.
Impeachment proceedings will buy time to organize and provide an opportunity for a period of education about the true nature of the threat to democracy we face.
This rally and march is one of many scheduled to be held in cities across the country as a way for Americans from every walk of life to come together in their collective demand for proceedings begin as soon as possible for the impeachment of the current President of the United States.
Here’s a statement from the local Impeachment March organizers:
We understand that the idea of impeaching the president of the United States seems unrealistic; however, we must learn and remember our past; Dr. King never thought his dream would become reality but he still pursued it, despite it being out of reach at that specific time.
Also, we understand the fear many members of different communities are living in, at the same time, if we do not take it upon ourselves to seek justice for all, no one will. We’re inviting everyone who wants this President to be impeached to attend – whether they belong to an activist group or organization, or have never marched for anything in their lives before. We hope to see everyone here at Waterfront Park at 11am on July 2nd.
I’m normally not big on petition drives but will make an exception for the demand for the start of impeachment hearings currently being circulated.
As of when I’m writing this on Friday morning, 1,139,838 people and counting have signed their names to the campaign to Impeach Trump Now. Sign the Petition here.
Resistance is about persistence and there remains a lot of work to be done.
So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.,
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.
You can now subscribe to the weekly Progressive Calendar. It’s free and we don’t share email addresses with anybody. Scroll down to the end of this column for the link.

City Heights Weingart Library

For More Information
Hosted by Amikas: Housing for Homeless Women & Children,
Homelessness in San Diego is a crisis, but there are real solutions we can implement now without special elections and millions of dollars. Hear what the City of Seattle is doing to get people off the streets and into safe emergency housing that leads to permanent housing. Sharon Lee, is the founding Executive Director of Seattle’s Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) that develops and operates housing for low-income and homeless people and provides supportive service programs to assist tenants in maintaining stable housing.
Lee, an advocate on issues of housing justice, housing preservation, and homelessness, will describe how LIHI took the innovative step in September, 2013, to host and operate a homeless encampment of tiny houses on their vacant property. Building on their success, LIHI now manages several Seattle sites in partnership with Nickelsville, SHARE/Wheel, the City of Seattle, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Ms Lee will be offering an overview of how these tiny house encampments began, how they are operated and what they have learned.
Following her presentation, there will be a roundtable conversation about how San Diego can implement similar programs in our City and County and what steps need to be taken to do it.

I am a fan of this publication. Find it informative and fairly consistent with my own beliefs. I am against “Regime Change” as practiced by our country over much of the 20th Century. I am against it domestically too.
I don’t find this impeachment drive anymore palatable than I did when they impeached Clinton. In fact it feels very much the same way as it did then. I voted against trump and wish he had lost. I don’t think what has been proved, not alleged, is anywhere close to why we should reverse the results of an election. Millions of our fellow citizens believe in him. You are stepping on those beliefs. Just because you can isn’t always a good reason to do something. Reversing elections is sort of a Revolution. Civil War. We are contemplating things which could easily get out of hand. Again, I hated it when they did it to Clinton. I suspect Trump’s people feel much the same.
I think there’s kind of a difference between lying about illicit sex and –as yet unproven– collaboration with a hostile foreign power.
As we see in the Washington Post story concerning GOP obstruction of responding to cyber attacks on voting systems in 2016, the Congress will drag its feet on this unless there is unyielding pressure.
I’d feel a lot better about impeaching Trump if the Democratic Party could discover its roots and put on its boots. When the party can show its thanks to Bernie and Grihalva and borrow some passion from them and its many lefties it might get back to winning elections. Instead, in Georgia it spent an estimated $25 million on a 30-year-old named Ossof who nevertheless lost because he was running against an experienced Republican woman. Can anyone name what Ossof did to get this far? Imagine what could have been accomplished with $25 million during the upcoming 2018 election against Duncan Hunter and/or Issa? Impeachment’s a long shot; Democrats had better go local or we’ll suffocate under the empty fumes the party is emitting.
