FILIKO TERAS (THE AYIA NAPA SEA MONSTER)
At a place called Cavo Greco
waves break inside rocks
sun foams from the mouths of caves
messengers are mistaken for their songs
Land
falls
cliffs
dive
Water climbs toward us
in the form of a mythological beast
Nets that tangled arms
before we found them
melt into the mosaic of sea floor
Note: Filiko Teras (which means friendly monster in Greek) is a legendary sea monster said to inhabit the waters off of Ayia Napa, Cyprus.
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry. Ish, as he is known, has also written lyrics for German musicians Andrea Hörkens and Thomas Roderburg (Tender Art).
