juneBy Doug Porter

Just when I thought things might be slowing down for the summer, the political world has gone bonkers, the resistance has spread even further, and we have our first heat wave of the summer.

It looks like the employment boom under Donald Trump is kicking off as El Jefe’s lawyers have hired attorneys to represent themselves. Vice President Mike Pence has also retained representation.

The President of the United States has apparently gone unhinged on Twitter. Trump’s (probably accidentally) confirmed news accounts saying he is the target of an investigation…  (I’m hesitant to write any more because things are just moving too fast.)

Senate Republicans are continuing to draft TrumpCare V. XXX in secret this week with a goal of bringing the bill to a vote before the July 4th recess. (Keep calling!)

Locally, the County Supervisors got to see what democracy looks like as over a thousand people looking for social justice showed up for an evening budget hearing.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer failed at punishing City Council members who pushed back against a special election desired by the hotel industry. He got a less than warm reception at UCSD on Friday.

The groans & laughter were audible from the giant crowd at UCSD when @Kevin_Faulconer was introduced#RememberTheRocks

A conference for advocates of “Pray the Gay Away” has seen daily demonstrations. Lat weekend’s Equality March drew thousands to the streets of San Diego and other cities around the country.

Rep. Duncan Hunter’s now got a billboard up in his district reminding constituents that he’s under investigation. The weekly protests outside Congressman Darrell Issa’s office continue.

Resistance is about persistence and there remains a lot of work to be done.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement and a few reading suggestions.

Get your event listed:  I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases.

Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed.  In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

You can now subscribe to the weekly Progressive Calendar. It’s free and we don’t share email addresses with anybody. Scroll down to the end of this column for the link.

Now more than ever, we need to recognize the challenges that adolescent girls face in pursuing education. Join us on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 to show our community the importance of equal education access for women around the world! Basic animals rights include food, water, shelter, healthcare, and basic necessities that are needed to allow a pet and veteran to live a long life filled with love and joy. Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales became one of the central leaders in the Chicano movement and a strong proponent of Chicano nationalism. He organized and supported high school walkouts, demonstrations against police brutality, and legal cases. He also organized the Annual Chicano Youth Liberation Conference, an ambitious effort to create greater unity among Chicano youth.

June 18 marks his 89th birthday. We want every conscious Chicanx to join our celebration of Corky’s life and legacy. In the era of Trump we should be united as never before. We gotta stand for defiance and resistance like Rodolfo Gonzales did. We gotta bring back the ideology of the Chicano movement in order to save ourselves.

June 19

Where’s Duncan?

Monday, June 19, 11am
Cochina del Charro Mexican Restaurant
890 West Valley Parkway (Escondido)
For More Information

The Escondido Republican Club is hosting Duncan Hunter at their monthly meeting at Cocina del Charro Mexican Restaurant in Escondido. Since he won’t meet with us, we’ll go wherever he is!

In light of the tragic shooting in Alexandria, we would like to promote a unity message to Duncan Hunter and all the constituents in District 50, regardless of affiliation. Please bring signs such as, “We’re ALL in This Together,” Country Before Party,” “Americans First and Foremost,” etc. Since we’re asking Duncan for another town hall, we are also asking for signs that say “We Want a Date with Duncan.” Despite rumors to the contrary, he has not yet scheduled a town hall for the August Congressional break.

This rally will be a little different. No bullhorns or chants, just standing peacefully with our signs. We put the shoe on the other foot and realized we would not appreciate loud chanting outside our Democratic Club meetings or candidate forums. And, a quiet, peaceful protest is especially relevant now. We’re asking that participants respect this request.

Club member Rena Marroco will lead discussion around her recent UT article, which outlines an apparent male power play, resulting in women elected officials being required to get approval from their male counterparts in order to place items on their City Council agendas. ICE and IMMIGRATION Response And Rights Workshop

St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran
1430 Melody Lane  (El Cajon)
For More Information

This event sponsored by the Minority Humanitarian Foundation with Mark Arabo, James Elia, and Fr. Noel. We are proud to have local activist and top immigration consultant Mark Lane teach the community their rights if one of our loved ones is detained by ICE or immigration.

There are a lot of rumors and people are living in fear. YOU HAVE RIGHTS and we want to clear up all these rumors and teach you what to do.

For months, the So-called president and his administration have been targeting Latinos very aggressively with deportations and it has now started with the Chaldean community. 80 Chaldeans have been taken this past weekend from a church and many Arabs were taken too. There are TEN that have been detained in San Diego. WE NEED TO STAND UP AND SUPPORT EACHOTHER.

If you’re Latino, Chaldean, Arab, or just a concerned person come to this workshop. Educate yourself and learn your rights, or learn so you can teach someone else so we can stop the barbaric process of ripping families apart. To think we are considering sending people to war zones, especially sending people back to ISIS is NOT American.

Film Screening – Warehoused

Tuesday, June 20, 7pm
LandMark Hillcrest Cinemas
3965 5th Avenue
For More Information  (Tickets)
Hosted by International Rescue Committee in San Diego

Every year, unique perspectives from around the world come to San Diego for the IRC’s International Documentary Film Series. From the frontlines of conflict to rebuilding life in a new country, these films take an honest look at the reality of the refugee experience. Each screening is followed by a Q&A discussion with an expert on the film’s subject area.

The second film in the 2017 series is the feature-length documentary Warehoused. The film highlights the plight of long-term refugees over the course of history, culminating in today’s refugee crisis. The term ‘warehoused’ refers to asylum seekers, trapped in border camps for five years or more, without the right to work, generate income, move freely or choose their place of residence.

Warehoused sheds light on the seemingly insurmountable challenges facing refugees across the globe through an intimate glimpse into daily life at Dadaab, Kenya — the world’s largest refugee camp. We see the camp’s inner workings through the refugees’ personal stories, most notably Liban and his perseverance to provide for and reunite with his family.

Women Occupy San Diego
Free Film Night – Salt of the Earth

Tuesday, June 20, 6:30pm
Women’s Museum of California
2730 Historic Decatur Road, Barracks 16
For More Information

Salt of the Earth is the true story of mining strike by workers in New Mexico where a real-life strike occurred in the early 1950s at a zinc mine owned by the Empire Zinc Co.  Many of the people in the movie were participants in the strike; their passion comes through vividly.  Most film participants were residents of the town near the zinc mine where the strike actually took place – in the County of Grant, NM.  The strike began because the Mexican-American mine workers demanded equality with the Anglo workers; the demanded a safe environment, and to be treated with dignity by their bosses.  The film can also be described as a feminist film; as revealed in the oppressive sexism shown by the women’s husbands, in their attempts to “keep their women in their place” – however much their wives tried to help and support their husbands during the labor strike.

Hear what the City of Seattle is doing to get people off the streets and into safe emergency housing that leads to permanent housing. Sharon Lee, is the founding Executive Director of Seattle’s Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) that develops and operates housing for low-income and homeless people and provides supportive service programs to assist tenants in maintaining stable housing.

Lee, an advocate on issues of housing justice, housing preservation, and homelessness, will describe how LIHI took the innovative step in September, 2013, to host and operate a homeless encampment of tiny houses on their vacant property. Building on their success, LIHI now manages several Seattle sites in partnership with Nickelsville, SHARE/Wheel, the City of Seattle, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Ms Lee will be offering an overview of how these tiny house encampments began, how they are operated and what they have learned.

Following her presentation, there will be a roundtable conversation about how San Diego can implement similar programs in our City and County and what steps need to be taken to do it.

Other Stuff to Do

Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.

Sign Up For SwingLeft: Control of the House in 2018 will be decided by a handful of Swing Districts, places where the last election was decided by a thin margin.
