via Twitter. Trump Chicken visits DC
The good news as I write this is that Dear Leader hasn’t declared war. Yet. The bad news is that worrying about armed conflict can be distracting as hell.
I compiled an extra long list of events this week proving that, whatever the challenges, people remain engaged in a big way.
And, this will be the last calendar this month because I’m going to Switzerland to pick up suitcases full of small bills from George Soros. We’ll be livin’ la vida loca in September, comrades.
I will not be off the grid, however, so if major news breaks and there is an activist response brewing, there will be something written about it at San Diego Free Press.
So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

NFL Protest & Boycott In Support of Colin Kaepernick
Saturday, August 12, 3pm
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
3911 South Figueroa (Los Angeles)
For More Information
Editor’s Note: I don’t typically list Los Angeles events, but in this case, I’m making an exception.
There is no doubt that Kaepernick is being blackballed by NFL owners for exercising his first amendment rights in a non-violent peaceful statement. Kaepernick was trying to draw attention to racial profiling, police abuse and the disproportionate amount of people of color being killed unjustly by law enforcement nationally.
The NFL is a form of the modern-day plantation, most of the players are black and the ownership is all white. They’re treating Kaepernick like a runaway slave, making him an example so other players get the message. Do not get too uppity or we will blackball you. The parallels are very much like slavery, except the players are million-dollar slaves under contract who have made billions for the NFL.

STOP San Diego Water Shut-Offs
Monday, August 14, 6pm
State Water Board Hearing
2375 Northside Drive
For More Information
The Western Service Workers Association has been around for 40 years providing free food, medical services, and legal advice for families in San Diego. In 2015, while going person to person in neighborhood after neighborhood the WSWA found that San Diego was shutting off water to over 24,000 homes a year accounting for over 70,000 residents. In this great country, clean running water should be an afterthought. Not only is this a moral issue, this is a health issue. A family of six with four children who go without water for a week are unable to cook, bathe, or even flush a toilet. Those children go to school with an immune system just trying to keep up. They are more likely to become ill, miss school and infect their siblings or parents. America’s Finest City must reexamine it’s priorities. We should all agree, RUNNING WATER is not the type of roadblock San Diego families should face on the journey to success. Not in 2017. STOP WATER SHUTOFFS
Join the WSWA in the Water for All struggle. This Monday at 6pm, the State Water Board is holding a public hearing concerning (AB 401 of 2015) what a water relief program should look like, how it should be structured, and how it should be paid for. Come hear the stories of children carrying pails of water up the doorstep. Speak up for the single mothers receiving their final shut-off notice. Let us be clear when we address the State Water Board; TAKE MEANINGFUL ACTION!

Paper Tigers – A timely film about restorative practices in schools just as San Diego public schools promise to move from criminal to restorative justice for our kids.
”It is here, at the crossroads of at-risk teens and trauma-informed care, that Paper Tigers takes root. Set within and around the campus of Lincoln Alternative High School in the rural community of Walla Walla, Washington, Paper Tigers asks the following questions: What does it mean to be a trauma-informed school? And how do you educate teens whose childhood experiences have left them with a brain and body ill-suited to learn?
In search of clear and honest answers, Paper Tigers hinges on a remarkable collaboration between subject and filmmaker. Armed with their own cameras and their own voices, the teens of Paper Tigers offer raw but valuable insight into the hearts and minds of teens pushing back against the specter of a hard childhood.
Against the harsh reality of truancy, poor grades, emotional pain, and physical violence, answers begin to emerge. The answers do not come easily. Nor can one simply deduce a one-size-fits-all solution to a trauma-informed education. But there is no denying something both subtle and powerful at work between teacher and student alike: the quiet persistence of love.”

Boycott Driscoll’s Global Action
Wednesday, August 16, 7pm
Whole Foods
711 University Avenue (Hillcrest)
For More Information
An accord was established on June 4, 2015 which addressed all the the issues at hand with farmer workers in Baja The only problem is that none of the solutions covered were really honored by the growers. Even the increase of salaries that was met was turned into a laughing matter by them when the workload double in the fields, just to justify the pay increase. To this day those who can’t finish their daily work tasks meet harsh consequences. In some cases they are not allowed to work the next day.
All of those who peacefully protested and demanded their right at the beginning of the strike back in March of 2015 are blacklisted and are still having a very hard time finding work.
Many unions, consumers and workers in general have already joined and support the Boycott of Driscoll’s Berries as an efforts to put a stop to these atrocities. On behalf of the agricultural workers of San Quintin we welcome your solidarity as we chant Boycott Driscoll’s

Bail Reform Film Screening and Town Hall Discussion
Thursday, August 17, 6pm
Second Chance

For More Information (RSVP)
California’s current money bail system unfairly penalizes people with low to moderate incomes and increases racial disparities in the criminal justice system. It fails our families and our communities, and is in desperate need of reform.
That’s why we are calling on our elected officials across the state to vote YES on SB 10, the California Money Bail Reform Act. We know our community has questions. What will SB 10 do? What impact does money bail have on our local community? What will our local government be required to do once the bill passes?
Come get answers. Join us on for a town hall discussion about money bail reform. We’ll hear from impacted community members, and discuss status updates about federal, state and local efforts to reform this unjust system. We’ll also feature a short film released by Brave New Films and the ACLU of California.

IF TRUMP FIRES MUELLER
Activists with MoveOn, Public Citizen, and Indivisible San Diego (among others) are laying the groundwork for local responses to actions the President may take along these lines.
Via Facebook:
We will be in a constitutional crisis for real and will have to be ready to make some noise! The protest happens immediately if and when Trump fires Mueller.
We will gather with pots and pans to bang, and food, water and chairs to stay for a few hours. We will also present a letter to our members of Congress, urging them to pass legislation designating a special prosecutor that Trump can’t fire.
In downtown San Diego, the site of protests is currently the US District Court Building at 333 West Broadway–5 to 8pm daily. (More info)
In Escondido, the site of protests is slated to be near the Westfield North County Mall, 272 East Via Rancho Parkway–5 to 8pm daily. (More info)
Other Stuff to Do
Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
Sign Up For SwingLeft: Control of the House in 2018 will be decided by a handful of Swing Districts, places where the last election was decided by a thin margin. Find your closest Swing District and join its team to learn about actionable opportunities to support progressives—and defeat Republicans—in that district, no matter where you live. Check out SwingLeft here.
Sign Up for Indivisible. All the cool kids are doing it. (Really!)

Awesome collection of meetings and groups. Hoorah San Diego.
For me, getting rid of TRUMP is our nation’s #1 priority. I want to be part of a city/state Action to communicate to politicians and voters how dangerous and despicable he is. TOO CRAZY, TOO STUPID, TOO SELFISH, TOO NARCISSISTIC. OUR NATIONAL NIGHTMARE DAILY. I AM SICK OF THIS IMMATURE, UNEDUCATED, FRAUD. I WANT TO HELP GET RID OF THIS CRIMINAL.
Thank you Doug- you’ve presented a daunting- and necessary- “to do” list for us to tackle while you’re gone. Enjoy your vacation (and try to unplug).
