Summer clouds Photo by Rich Kacmar

San Diego Free Press editor and Starting Line columnist Doug Porter is enjoying a California style stay-cation until Friday 25th.  Daily editors Annie Lane and Rich Kacmar will continue to post articles and read our emails with some pinch hinting from Anna Daniels.

In lieu of Doug’s analysis of the local and national scene, we invite you, our readers, to let us know what is on your mind in our comment section, or send a full length submission to contact@sandiegofreepress.org

Dahlia Lithwick, courts and law writer for Slate, lives in Charlottesville. She asks “When demonstrators plan to carry guns and cause fights, does the government have a compelling interest in regulating their expressive conduct more carefully than it’d be able to otherwise?” She notes that the police allegedly did not get involved initially because of the danger posed by gun toting freedom lovers.

She observes “But, ironically, by protecting the free speech rights of the white supremacists, [Judge]Conrad may have ultimately suppressed speech by ensuring an armed confrontation between the neo-Nazis and the counter-protesters would break out and that police would be powerless to stop it until blood was spilled.

The open carry laws will eventually lead to neo-Nazis marching in formation in the streets. REPEAL THE OPEN CARRY LAWS NOW!

The ACLU has decided that it will not represent armed groups seeking to exercise 1st amendment rights. (They advocated on behalf of alt-right to obtain permit in C’ville) But as you point out, open carry laws remain a problem.
Presence of guns clearly turns into a chilling suppression of free speech.

    From the It-Has-Come-To-This dept:

Amidst all the noise and cacophony surrounding the tearing-down of statues and symbols of the old Confederacy – we’re now hearing other voices raised, calling for those of George Washington (the Father of Our Country) and Thomas Jefferson (the author of our Declaration of Independence) to suffer the SAME FATE??!!

Folks – at this rate, our enemies WON’T have to do a THING…

They can just sit back, pass the popcorn (or whatever) and watch and cheer, AS WE TEAR OURSELVES ASUNDER.

    Think, now…

HAS it, truly, come down to this? Really?

    THINK!!

The “what statue will be attacked next?” talk is being generated by Trump and his neo-Nazi, white supremacist cronies. This argument is a-historical– Washington and Jefferson were nation builders. Confederate generals committed an act of sedition (treason)in defense of slavery against the nation.

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
