If you happen to live in or visit one of the neighborhoods surrounding the East Village, you’ve no doubt noticed an influx of homeless humans in the past few days.
San Diego’s been getting an increasing amount of negative publicity about the epidemic of Hepatitis A. Based on what I’ve seen this week, the City’s response has been two fold:
- Hire some new faces for public relations purposes
- Send large squads of police to disperse homeless encampments
So we’re hearing lots of “good news,” even as people with nowhere to call home are chased around the city. The sidewalks are being powerwashed, bathrooms and hand washing stations have appeared, and one thousand veterans have a place to call home. Mayor Kevin Faulconer passed up a Chamber of Commerce trip to Washington, DC to manage the crisis.
The Reader says public relations pro Greg Block has joined the Mayor’s staff to accentuate the positive (city efforts) and point a finger elsewhere (county efforts) when needed. Suddenly hizzoner is all over social media, and it’s all good news.
I’ve opened up several libraries as a place for nurses to offer free vaccines to those at-risk for Hep A. Visit @211SD to find more clinics. pic.twitter.com/VSEqMqyw3c
— Kevin Faulconer (@Kevin_Faulconer) September 27, 2017
The Union-Tribune editorial board also made the Kevin-Katrina connection, and correctly pointed out the County deserves its fair share of the blame:
This month, after lacking it for months, city and county officials finally showed a sense of urgency — ramping up vaccination, sanitation and education — to fight the nation’s worst hepatitis A outbreak since a vaccine was rolled out in 1995. Now, San Diego officials have expanded sidewalk power-washing far beyond its downtown core — as cases crop up in Orange, Los Angeles and Santa Cruz counties as well as across San Diego County, from El Cajon to Chula Vista to Oceanside. One-third of our county’s 461 cases are neither homeless nor illicit drug users.
Why criminalizing homeless humans is a bad idea (h/t Lori Sandana)
While setting up designated camping areas isn’t the optimum solution for solving homelessness, the current crisis demands immediate action. Having the police push people around under the guise of “saving” and “educating” them simply won’t do.
There are three areas in the city available for short-term campsites: SDCCU (formerly Qualcomm) Stadium, which provided a safe haven for 20,000 people during the 2007 wildfires, the lot at Valley View Casino Center and the city’s Central Operations property at 20th and B.
Obviously more needs to be done than simply rolling out the welcome mat, and those needed services and facility upgrades will cost money. I hear there’s $5 million sitting in a fund for City of San Diego special elections. And then there’s the matter of the County & City moneys offered up back in the day when saving the NFL in town was a priority.
All that’s lacking is the political will. Let your City Councilperson and/or Supervisor know that further delays are not acceptable.
Sign this petition from Women Occupy asking Mayor Faulconer to open up the stadium parking lot.

Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Village Apartments
7025 Eastman Street (Linda Vista)
For More Information
Hosted by San Diego Tenants United
We are marching with over 50 tenants that will be going on RENT STRIKE until they get a new lease agreement. We have been negotiating with management for over two months and they have yet to offer a reasonable contract. They are raising rents to unaffordable levels without justification. Conditions are deplorable and the landlords prefer driving out tenants who are working class people of color, mainly Mexican, with untenable rent hikes.
We have been protesting the conditions for over a year and people are still being neglected. We offered a Rent increase capped at 2%. This is also what we are proposing as Rent Control for San Diego. Please join the tenants of Linda Vista and help the tenants of San Diego by scoring this important victory as we start to change the tides of power.

Workshop: What Can We Do about Climate Change?
Saturday, September 30, 2:30pm
3850 Westgate Place
For More Information
Hosted by Peace Resource Center of San Diego
Climate change is impacting us now via extreme weather events like Hurricane Harvey, sea level rise, and the greater risk of California wildfires. These events cause loss of life and property and result in personal trauma. They reduce the monies that could have been spent on health, education, and welfare. Probably one of your friends or family has been significantly impacted.
Since climate change is a society-wide problem, how can we as individuals and organizations respond to climate change in ways that make a difference? Join us at the Peace Resource Center for an interactive workshop on this topic. We’ll touch on the ethics of climate change from perspectives of faith, explore the ecological values that unite persons with or without faith, and network and strategize on solutions we can put into action. All are welcome!! Snacks will be provided.

Hosted by San Diego IWW
IWW is hosting a picnic in Chicano Park as part of a series of community celebrations. The Che Cafe Support Network and UCSD Co-ops and Collectives Alumni Association have called for house parties and community events to celebrate the success of the three year long Save the Che Cafe Campaign. The signing of a new 8 year lease between all four of the student-run coops, including ‘the Che,’ and the UCSD administration in July of 2017 ends the long fight to stop the administration’s efforts to evict the Che Cafe.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Che Cafe building as the first student center at UCSD. It started in 1967 as the Coffee Hut and became the Che Cafe in 1980. Another reason to celebrate!
October 9, 2017 is also Indigenous People’s Day. Another event at the park will follow our picnic. From 6 -8 pm, Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca will perform at the Kiosco.
