Here comes the blizzard of baloney* from defenders of San Diego Gas & Electric.
City News Service reports a coalition of business and civic leaders are now working to undermine Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs.
CCEs –where power is purchased by public entities– across the state offer electricity with significantly more renewable content and comparable or lower costs. Customers can choose to stay with the status quo, if wanted.
The ‘Clear the Air Coalition’ would like to halt the move toward the cheaper, cleaner, and locally generated electricity in San Diego because of “uncertainties.”
In case you didn’t know it, ‘uncertainties’ is the contemporary business code word for “we’ve got no evidence, so we’d better gin up the fear.”
All across California, cities and counties have been moving to implement community choice programs. The competition created by these programs has had the effect of driving down costs for all consumers (including those still served by investor-owned utilities) and cleaning up the sources used for generating electricity.
Citing deliberations by the California Public Utilities Commission, opponents of community choice want city officials to wait to be sure that it achieves “real and additional” greenhouse gas emission reductions.
They are also not-so-slyly playing the “risk to taxpayers” card. Never mind the other states allowing community choice aggregation programs, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio and Rhode Island.and half-dozen districts in California have yet to encounter such problems.
Perhaps the “Clear the Air Coalition” is referring to the ongoing attempts by investor-owned utilities in California to sabotage local efforts.
Tyson Siegele with SD350.org explained some of their nefarious deeds at the state level in an article posted at SDFP last December.
Last but not least, our own utility, San Diego Gas and Electric unmasked itself and openly declared its nefarious intentions. In 2016 SDG&E asked the public utilities commission for approval to set up an independent lobbying arm to oppose the competition from community choice aggregation (another name for a CCE). Thus, instead of taking the position, “If you can’t beat’em, join’em,” SDG&E opted for the lesser known, “If you can’t beat’em… ask Mom and Dad if it would be okay to beat up on your little brother until he cries uncle.”
On August 19, 2016, the Public Utilities Commission sided once again with the utilities and approved the lobbying arm. So, if you thought the last election cycle was bloated with fake news, just wait until you see what SDG&E’s lobbying arm comes up with.
Lest you have further questions about this latest effort to sow uncertainty, consider the participation of former Mayor Jerry Sanders on behalf of San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. His track record on behalf of the less-than-rich speaks for itself.
UPDATE: The Climate Action Campaign, who has worked toward the establishment of a CCE in San Diego, issued a statement. Here’s a snip:
A group of familiar faces from the downtown establishment, including SDG&E’s parent company Sempra, recently formed a coalition to eliminate San Diegan’s freedom to choose our own electricity provider. This coalition of usual suspects seeks to take away the opportunity and the right for families and small businesses to break away from the monopoly and enjoy lower bills and more clean energy.
Every single organization in this downtown business coalition is heavily supported by SDG&E and its parent company, Sempra Energy, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to purchase the silence of business groups so they can maintain their monopoly on San Diego customers.
“The Taxpayers Association and the Chamber of Commerce obviously don’t represent my employees or my small business, who need all the help we can get to make ends meet and keep our businesses alive. Those organizations are the reason why we are stuck paying the highest rates in the state, while small businesses in all of the counties who have adopted Community Choice are enjoying lower bills with more clean energy,” said Mikey Knab, Director of Operations of Ponce’s Mexican Restaurant.
What we can count on in the coming months is an unrelenting campaign designed to plant the seeds of doubt in the local citizenry. Fortunately, community choice advocates have taken a grassroots approach toward organizing. Now they’ll have to confront the big utilities’ spin in more places and forums than before.
Activism counts.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

TrumanSD Hosts “Responding to White Nationalism”
Saturday, September 16, 6pm
Icon Skybox
321 10th Avenue (Downtown)
For More Information (Tickets)
As the “alt-right” is emboldened to increasing its public demonstrations and actions, it is imperative that communities think about coordinating responses in the interest of maintaining public safety for all its citizens, while reaffirming that our diversity is the very thing which makes our country strong. The violent demonstrations of white nationalists on August 12th in Charlottesville, VA – including the terrorist attack that that left one dead and dozens injured – lays bare the need to take action in response to groups that had once resigned themselves to existing on the fringe of society. This salon will discuss the history of white nationalism, including the “alt-right” and Nazi sympathizing groups in the United States (and San Diego), the current state of affairs, and the way forward. We hope you’ll join the San Diego chapter of the Truman National Security Project in working to push this scourge back into the shadows where they belong. We don’t need to remind anyone what happened last time a group of Nazis took on Truman. That legacy is all of ours to carry forward.
The format is easy – a guided discussion with the featured guests leading. You will enjoy delicious snacks, delightful conversation, and drinks. The rest of the audience will be thought leaders, elected officials, and community leaders from the Southern California region with an interest in learning more about this cancer within our society. Moderated by Voice of San Diego’s Scott Lewis

While we are at it, let’s talk some on Mayor Faulkner and Soccer City and other scandals in the County and in the State. …and other similar topics scandals we will find aggravating but interesting.

Other Stuff to Do
Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
Sign Up For SwingLeft: Control of the House in 2018 will be decided by a handful of Swing Districts, places where the last election was decided by a thin margin. Find your closest Swing District and join its team to learn about actionable opportunities to support progressives—and defeat Republicans—in that district, no matter where you live. Sign Up for Indivisible. All the cool kids are doing it. (Really!)
