Can We Talk about Climate Change Before the Next Round of Wildfires?
It’s the time of year when the smell of smoke in the air makes many of us afraid. The Santa Ana (Southern California) and (Northern California) Diablo winds become more frequent in October, with humidity and the temperature rising and falling through each week.
Our state’s “fire season” used to run from June to October is now a year-round threat due to a mixture of perennial drought and increasing development near canyons and on hillsides surrounded by brush and forest.
Ten years ago, thirty wildfires in Southern California burned near one million acres. Five massive fires in San Diego (there were others throughout Southern California) destroyed more than 2500 structures in the space of a week, starting on October 20th. More than 600,000 people were ordered to evacuate their homes.
In the last week, wildfires in Northern California have destroyed more than 7,000 structures and left at least 42 people dead.
The fossil fuel apologists running our government and their compatriots in the echo chamber otherwise known as Fox News have waved away meaningful discussion about the connections between climate change, wildfires in the west, and hurricanes in the Atlantic.
“It’s too soon,” they say, mimicking the approach used by the National Rifle Association and their toadies after every mass shooting.
Those of living through these disasters know better. Somehow, we’ve got to break through the “I’ve got mine, eff the rest of you” mentality in this country.
Here’s a good summation of what’s going on, via Media Matters:
Many scientists have pointed to climate change as a significant factor that’s intensifying fires like those in California. Columbia University bioclimatologist Park Williams, who co-authored a study last year that found climate change was markedly worsening wildfires in the American West, talked to McClatchy about the California fires last week: “The fingerprint is definitely there,” Williams said. “The connection between temperatures and fire is one we see again and again in the correlation analyses we do.”
California Gov. Jerry Brown emphasized the connection last week: “With a warming climate, dry weather and reducing moisture, these kinds of catastrophes have happened and will continue to happen,” he said.
And five of California’s biggest papers have published editorials clearly connecting the dots between this year’s out-of-control wildfire season and climate change.

Happy Birthday!
The 2007 fires are significant to many of us around here for another reason. The angst, anger, and sense of needing to do something led to the rebirth of the OB Rag as an online publication. About five years later the San Diego Free Press grew out of the important work done by Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, and numerous others in Ocean Beach. So I’m want to acknowledge the 10 year anniversary of the OB Rag. You should read the article on how it all started.

Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

What is Community Choice Energy (CCE)? It is a program that brings choice and competition into the electricity marketplace. Right now SDG&E has a monopoly on that market. Also known as Community Choice Aggregation (CCA), it opens the market by allowing cities and counties to purchase power on behalf of their residents and businesses. It is also the most effective vehicle to get to our citywide goal of 100% renewable energy. Read more about Community Choice here.
This event is being sponsored by SanDiego350 and The Peace Resource Center of San Diego. During this Climate Chat, you’ll learn more about what CCE is, why SDG&E has been opposing it, how groups are working together and what you can do to get involved.
Our speaker Ty Tosdal, of Tosdal Law, represents and advises clients on energy regulatory matters and proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission specifically related to renewable energy, electricity rates, distribution and transmission issues.
