Gold Star parents, Sheila and Calvin Murphy, interviewed by MSNBC’s Ari Melber, talk about their son who was killed in Syria. 22-year-old Army Specialist Etienne Murphy died in May after an armored vehicle he was in rolled over. For Sheila, the issue is “not really about whether or not [the president] may have called or did something more than the previous one. It’s about what are you doing now to help those who are left behind, who have to struggle day to day …”
We at San Diego Free Press love watching all kinds of video. Those short visual stories entertain, inform, and agitate in a way completely different from the written word.
Since our platform is about expressing ideas and ideals instead of cash flow, clicks, or fundraising, we have the freedom to include a wide range of topics and formats that might not work elsewhere. We don’t need or want paid content, promotional materials, or story lines designed to please donors.
So the idea here is to present videos one or more of the editors feel speaks to them. Sometimes it will be news. Sometimes it will be history. And a lot of the time it will be culture. You can not and should not separate these things: it is diversity and intersectionality that makes our movement strong.

He died in a rollover. Sad but true.
Heartbreaking to see you this Mom’s pain and suffering. As a mom I would like to send her a letter or card. Please, I’m hopeful hoping you’ will be able to provide an address for this family.
Sincerely,
Milena Kaplan
This Vietnam veteran (1967-68, 1971-72) wants to assure the family and friends of SPC Etienne Murphy that he will NEVER be forgotten so long as his brothers and sisters in arms live and can speak his name.
Who can forget Etienne’s beautiful smile? My condolences to his parents,it was an honor to meet your wonderful son!Lucy from Phx,Az.
My heart goes out to this family, your son is a hero and will be remembered. (In large part thanks to your strength and story) I also would like to know if there’s an address to send a card or a fund to help this family one could contribute to.
I saw the tv show today and cried like a baby. Being an ARMY veteran these parents HAVE to understand that their gallant son will NEVER be forgotten. He has a bad of “brothers” who will never allow that to happen. We will never understand their pain and sorrow. However it is now our job to honor their son. Please if somebody could send me their address I would love to send them a personal letter explaining their family sacrifice will never be forgotten!
