It must feel as though the walls are closing in at the White House. And the President’s responses go way beyond Twitter.
CNN reports Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team met with Christopher Steele, the former MI-6 officer whose dossier on alleged Russian involvement with the Trump campaign triggered months of investigations. Steele was reportedly willing to name his heretofore secret sources.
Politico reported on GOP donors, frustrated with the lack of accomplishments, closing their wallets. Contributions to the National Republican Senatorial Committee have fallen by 50% in recent months. The President took time out from his Las Vegas photo ops to meet with top donor Sheldon Adelson, who reportedly was unhappy about what’s not going on.
It’s also FireDay at the White House, aka Friday, and there are reports saying Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will be replaced by CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Four cabinet secretaries are caught up in scandals over their use of private and/ government airplanes.
And then there was the bizarre incident at the White House on Thursday evening when White House reporters were summoned unexpectedly to document a dinner the President was holding with the military leaders and their wives.
Then, Trump gestured to the reporters in the room. ‘You guys know what this represents?’ Trump asked. ‘Maybe it’s the calm before the storm.'”
“What storm, Mr. President?” one reporter shouted. “ISIS? North Korea? Iran?”
Trump replied: “You’ll find out.”
Axio’s Jonathan Swan thinks Trump was just trolling the press. Democratic Congressman Rep. Ted Lieu wasn’t so sure, urging his colleagues to support his bill that would bar the president from launching a nuclear first strike without congressional approval.
On the domestic front, it appears war has already been declared.
The Trump administration will be announcing a new rule limiting “the federal requirement for employers to include birth control coverage in their health insurance plans, vastly expanding exemptions for those that cite moral or religious objections,” according to the New York Times.
The Washington Post reported on the Trump administration’s executive actions designed to undercut the Affordable Care act, saying the President personally intervened in Iowa to prevent that state’s efforts to control premiums.
The Treasury Department is expected to issue a ruling effectively undermining the requirement that most Americans obtain coverage, and industry uncertainty over the administration’s plans is directly tied to premium increases throughout the country.
Andy Slavitt, former administrator for Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA under President Obama, paints an even gloomier picture, saying the White House is undertaking what he terms “synthetic repeal” of Obamacare.
He’s predicting an executive order allowing “association health plans” to be offered with no pre-existing protections, effectively turning ACA into a high-risk pool. This, combined with the administration’s bureaucratic undermining of the law, and the $1.5 trillion in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid baked into the GOP’s budget plans should doom Obamacare.
One Senator said to me tonight: the health care bill was about hidden tax cuts. Now the tax bill is about hidden health care cuts.

Yesterday the Federal Emergency Management Agency removed statistics concerning the availability of drinking water and electricity in Puerto Rico on its Web page documenting the federal response to Hurricane Maria. Data reflecting positively on the Trump administration efforts remains untouched.

Sorry about that, trans folks…The Justice Department has decided it will no longer interpret Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to mean that the law’s protections extend to discrimination based on gender identity, according to The Hill.
Then there are the breaches in national security coming to light. The Wall Street Journal says an National Security Agency contractor’s employee took highly classified materials home, where anti-virus software made by Kaspersky Lab was used to steal data for the Russian government.
Politico reports White House chief of staff John Kelly’s personal cell phone was compromised, raising concerns about bad actors having access to data while he was secretary of Homeland Security and after he joined the West Wing.
And finally, there is the explosive Buzzfeed story documenting the links between Breitbart News, neo-Nazis and white supremacist leaders. To make a long story short, the story reveals the details about how the so-called alt-right was used as a bridge between the Republican party and extremists. The video of Milo Yiannopoulos singing “America” at a karaoke bar while audience members gave the Nazi salute is a real chiller.
Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

You may think you know them from their critically acclaimed records and CDs. But if you’ve never seen them in person, you don’t know them at all.
6th Anniversary – Occupy San Diego:
Ideas Suppress Corruption
Friday, October 6, Noon
San Diego Civic Center Concourse
202 C Street (Downtown)
For More Information
Hosted by Women Occupy – San Diego
Since March of 2016, the City of San Diego has followed a pattern of ticketing, arrest, and stay-away orders for “Encroachment” Against Unsheltered San Diegans left nowhere else to live but City Streets, refining the model developed against 24/7 Occupiers in the San Diego Civic Concourse from Fall 2011 through Spring 2012. And as SDPD tried to do to Occupy San Diego, the City seems to be trying to move Unsheltered people to Balboa Park — making 14 restrooms there 24/7 before launching the very aggressive sweeps in the past 2 weeks.
We return to Freedom Plaza on this day and at this time, to demonstrate that “Ideas Surpass Corruption”:
“This movement is about ideas, and ideas open and liberate, they evolve. When ideas don’t work, you throw them away and try new ones. No one’s the worse for it, or the better for it, and no one’s attached to it, because it’s about process. It’s about making things work, as opposed to holding on to something as a belief.

We will show our community and the nation: we know the truth and we see racist exploitation for what it is.
Join us in this powerful nonviolent demonstration for the truth about justice in America today. We will spell the word JUSTICE for a drone photo as hundreds of us take the knee for Kap and Fannie Lou. Optional: Following the drone photo, attend the event at Jacobs honoring Hamer.
Sierra Talks – Rigs to Reefs:
Exploring the Future of Offshore Oil and Gas Development
Friday, October 6, 6:30 pm
Joyce Beers Center
3900 Vermont Street (Hillcrest)
For More Information
In California, there are 27 oil and gas platforms found off the coast, each home to a thriving, unique ecosystem. A recent study published by the National Academy of Sciences concluded that “…the oil and gas platforms off California are among the most productive habitats globally.” As the world’s natural reefs continue to disappear due to overfishing, run-off, and pollution, we believe that repurposing offshore energy structures as artificial reefs may be the best decision for the future of our oceans.
It’s time to think creatively about the resources we have and proceed forward boldly with radical new tactics for ocean management. Ms. Jackson and Ms.Callahan have successfully conducted a multitude of research expeditions around the world. Recently, Blue Latitudes was awarded Explorers Club Flag #83 to accompany an expedition to Malaysia to investigate the ecological, cultural and economic potential of repurposing an offshore platform as an eco-tourism hotspot. Human Centered Design: How might we reduce the fear of others?
On Friday, September 22nd, member Bob Gralewski represented SURJ in a full-day workshop jointly presented by Impact Without Borders, the Design Academy, and Humankind. Utilizing a human-centered design (HCD) approach, Bob and the other participants considered the questions: who are people afraid of and why and how can we reduce the fear of others?
Throughout the day, Bob along with his cluster brainstormed asked “how might we” questions, and prototyped one possible solution to address this important problem.
Based on his interviews with everyday people on El Cajon Boulevard and 32nd Street, Bob found that some reasons people are afraid of others include lack of trust, uncertainty, or the surrounding environment. One thing seemed clear: fear was reduced or altogether eliminated when people were exposed to other people and genuine connections were made. The Education Committee together with Bob will be presenting a more in-depth summary of the workshop at our meeting.

Delaine is the former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction. She is the fourth woman to be elected to a statewide office, and is the first and is still the only woman to be elected Superintendent, a profession that is dominated by women. Delaine was elected Superintendent following eight years in the State Assembly and six years on the City Council in Union City. Delaine has run for office 14 times and has never lost an election.
Throughout her career, Delaine has been a leader who has never been afraid to stand up to bullies on behalf of what is right. She fought polluters and sponsored legislation that raised over $100 million for toxic cleanup. She took on Big Tobacco and passed propositions that taxed the tobacco industry to create ‘First 5 California’ and anti-smoking campaigns. And as part of the lawsuit against Proposition 187, Delaine successfully stopped California’s police, health care professionals and teachers from being used as de facto immigration agents.
Delaine has fought tirelessly for the children and people of California…and she has won. Now she is ready to take this fight into the Governor’s office to ensure that the people of this great state have high-quality education; affordable healthcare for ALL; a safe and clean environment; affordable housing; and that we build an economy that works for everyone.
Other Stuff to Do
Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
