“The only thing that is reliable and dependable about Trump is that he’s unreliable and not dependable”–GOP Lobbyist Ed Rogers
A checklist of the Trump administration’s accomplishments the week:
** Raised the possibility of using executive power to silence critical media.
“It’s really quite amazing when you think that freedom of the press, not only sort of a cornerstone of the U.S. Constitution but very much something that the United States defended over the years is now itself under attack from the President,” the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
An Indiana lawmaker has drafted a bill that would require professional journalists to be licensed by state police. —IndyStar
***Cut off a key Obamacare subsidy that makes copayments and deductibles more affordable for low-income Americans.
Premiums (for everybody!) to rise 20% in 2018, increases the national deficit, the number of uninsured to increase by 1 million people in 2018. An estimated 5% those currently covered will lose access to insurance as insurers pull out of the market. This action was taken despite a nearly done bipartisan deal to stabilize the insurance markets by Senators Murray & Alexander
*** Opened up the junk healthcare insurance market.
This will benefit people who are young and healthy (until they get sick and then get booted from their policy) at the expense of making it worse for those who are old or sick.
*** Nullified the Affordable Care Act requirement on employers including birth control in their health insurance coverage by issuing two Interim Final Rules, which bypass debate and take effect immediately.
***Instructed federal agencies and attorneys to ‘protect religious liberty’ in a broad, yet vague, guidance memo critics fear could give people of faith — including government workers and contractors — a loophole to ignore federal bans on discrimination against women and LGBT people.
***Continued to ignore a deadline to take initial actions called for under bi-partisan legislation signed in August to target the Russian defense and intelligence sectors.
***Announced the end of the Clean Power Plan, a regulation limiting planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.
***Threatened to pull federal emergency management workers from storm-ravaged Puerto Rico.
***Made the claim that “in a sense’ the rising stock market was reducing the national debt.
And who could forget:
**Challenged Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s I.Q. in an interview and insulted Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker’s diminutive stature in a tweet.
Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.
Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Our sisters and brothers in México and The Caribbean have been recently devastated by various natural disasters. Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and multiple earthquakes have left the Caribbean and central and southern México in need – with many lives and homes lost.
Our communities have done an excellent job of coming together to send emergency funds and supplies to both regions, it is heart-wrenching to see how well we work together. But we know that recovery does not last a week or two, it will last months and even years. This is why we want to come together in Barrio Logan to raise funds for the reconstruction and survival of our beloved communities.
Funds will be raised through a donation at the door, an art sale, and a silent auction.

Throughout her career, Delaine has been a leader who has never been afraid to stand up to bullies on behalf of what is right. She fought polluters and sponsored legislation that raised over $100 million for toxic cleanup. She took on Big Tobacco and passed propositions that taxed the tobacco industry to create ‘First 5 California’ and anti-smoking campaigns. And as part of the lawsuit against Proposition 187, Delaine successfully stopped California’s police, health care professionals and teachers from being used as de facto immigration agents.
Delaine has fought tirelessly for the children and people of California…and she has won. Now she is ready to take this fight into the Governor’s office to ensure that the people of this great state have high quality education; affordable healthcare for ALL; a safe and clean environment; affordable housing; and that we build an economy that works for everyone.
