INSIDE THE BOX
Before object permanence
awakened memory
the cardboard box
gathered dust in a cupboard
inside our family home
Blunt scissors
were the only tool required
to cut through through
layers of masking tape
and unify parallel universes
Eidolons remembered
and those whose names neglected rituals
damned to oblivion
enclosed in paper envelopes
from department stores that no longer develop the past
Inside:
the infant self
crawled back to me
the child found
his legs
the teenager
stepped up to bat
and ran home
Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Herbert Hoover High School and went on to study Religion and Theology at the University of San Diego. His book Intimate Geography, published by Ragged Sky Press, won the 2012 San Diego Book Award for Poetry. Ish, as he is known, has also written lyrics for German musicians Andrea Hörkens and Thomas Roderburg (Tender Art).
