How can we make sure the Blue Wave washes some of the sludge out of local government?
By rolling up our sleeves and getting to work. Early. Like now. And that’s what the San Diego County Democratic Party and many local activists are doing. And there is still time for YOU to get in on the action.
It’s the middle of ‘winter’ in San Diego, and this calendar lists eight canvassing efforts, along with four forums giving people an opportunity to see candidates in person over the next week or so. Bravo!
Many voters are not aware that our elected leaders in county government are all Republicans – despite the fact that Democrats outnumber Republicans here by more than 100,000. Voters also need to know that these county races could be won outright in June, so voting in the primary is critical to ensure county leadership that represents our community. —Democratic Party call for canvassers.
At SDFP we’ve started with our candidate profiles (and more are coming). This week’s four-part series gave an overview of the County’s electoral landscape and a brief introduction to leading Democratic candidates.
Pro Tip: The headline on each of these articles offers up a clue on each candidate’s approach to tackling the GOP monolith at the Board of Supervisors.
Part One: An Overview – These Elections Are the Ones to Watch
Part Two: Lori Saldaña – The Truth Will Set You Free
Part Three: Omar Passons – Policy Wonk With a Heart of Gold
Part Four: Nathan Fletcher – Build a Coalition for Change

Also, a brief shout-out to two arts+politics events:
- The MeTwo Chain March (Saturday, January 27)- a participatory art installation by local activist Aliza Amar representing the suffering of human sex trafficking victims.
- The Human Rights Film Festival (February 1-4) at the Museum of Photographic Arts, featuring a half-dozen films from around the world.
Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

This is your chance to have your voice heard on a national level that we will not welcome off-shore drilling on our coast!! The extraction and use of fossil fuels increases carbon emissions and jeopardizes both California’s clean energy goals, and the mandated enforceable Climate Action Plans of many jurisdictions. This is a survival issue for all life on the planet. Every resource we have should be dedicated to converting to clean energy.

Wow! Thanks so much, Doug, for your very informative political progressive calendar.
I’d like to let your readers know that our wonderful County Democratic Party has a very good program to help get registered voters out to vote. Yes, we’re in a political year, so that means our Grassroots Organizing (GO) Team will be out knocking on Dems/decline to state doors in your neighborhood in the near future. Training is given, and if you are interested in helping to get out the vote, contact our Co. Dem Party at 858-277-3367. You will be a Precinct Leader (PL). It has been shown that when we connect with registered voters in your own neighborhood, they likely may actually vote.
Our trained volunteers go to their own precinct (“I’m your neighbor…”) or nearby precinct if there is already a PL in your neighborhood.
Let’s get out the vote to make sure our Dems get elected.
