There are thirty-eight events of interest to activists in San Diego over the next ten days. I have a few observations about our County so-called government to share before you get to the good stuff:
First Amendment eff up. Journalist Kelly Davis has worked diligently over the past few years exposing injustices in local government. The County of San Diego didn’t take kindly to her (along with Dave Maass) exposés concerning (60!) jail deaths at the SD County Jail. So they decided to drag her into court to reveal her notes, interviews, and recordings from the award-winning CityBeat series. She’s off the hook, for now, thanks to a judge with common sense. But there’s still a chance the County government’s legal counsel will appeal. Read about it here.
Sexual predator County Sheriff still on the loose. County Sheriff Bill Gore’s investigation into a sheriff’s deputy accused by 14 women of groping them, along with other abuses of power was completed on January 19th. County District Attorney Summer Stephan had staff assigned to the three-month-long inquiry. So where are the charges?
Deputy Richard Fischer was placed on administrative duty in November and relieved of duties in December. He remains on the county payroll and has not been charged with any crimes.
It appears what’s going on here involves the time-honored technique of prosecutors dragging out proceedings against law enforcement officers accused of wrongdoing in the hope the public will forget about their offenses.
This is certainly the case with San Diego Police Department officer Colin Governski, caught perjuring himself in court via his own body-worn camera last summer. Tony Diaz, a homeless man had his conviction for a misdemeanor violation overturned when evidence surfaced proving the arresting officer lied under oath about the circumstances leading to the arrest. Six months later, the County District Attorney’s office has failed to take this case to court.
Speaking of coverups, how about County Sheriff Bill Gore’s office writing up Cmdr. David Myers (who’s running against Gore in June) for daring to meet (off duty) with Deputy Fisher’s 14 victims. The meeting, prior to the San Diego Women’s March last month, “could jeopardize an ongoing investigation,” according to the written warning. Via the Union-Tribune:
San Diego attorney Dan Gilleon represents both Myers and the 13 women who have filed legal claims or lawsuits against San Diego County. He said Wednesday the action against Myers is evidence the county is violating Myers’ right to seek elected office.
“It seems clear that this official order was designed to quell Mr. Myers’ free speech and campaign activities,” he said by email.
Gilleon also said the actions may serve to silence the victims as the civil cases move forward in a mediation proceeding.
“Whereas they claim they want to prosecute Fischer for his abuse of police power, the county realizes that the more my clients engage in these heroic ‘me too’ activities, the more victims will come forward,” he added. “I truly do not think the county wants to find more victims regardless of what various officials claim.”
The Sheriff’s office–which has re-assigned Myers to a broom closet–denies this action was retaliatory. The reality is they think they can get away with this sort of malfeasance. They think you’ll forget come June when it’s time to vote for Supervisor, District Attorney, and County Sheriff.

Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Oscar Lopez Rivera, who, in 1970’s, was a leader of the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña, was imprisoned for over 35 years in US federal prison, for his struggle for Puerto Rican independence and sovereignty from US colonialism over the islands economy.
At the time of his release in 2016, he was greeted as a national hero by tens of thousands in Puerto Rico and in the diaspora communities in the US. Since then, he has been working tirelessly to overcome the impact of US colonialism in Puerto Rico. An example of the continued status of colony has been the inadequate response by the US government after the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
Now he is coming on his first visit to Southern California, to speak with Puerto Ricans and others about his homeland and to raise funds for the Oscar Lopez Rivera Foundation to support the rebuilding effort, the Independence and Self-determination of the Puerto Rican people.

Join the Fight for 15 protest nationwide Feb. 12 – the 50th anniversary of the historic Memphis sanitation strike – carrying on the fight for higher wages and union rights led by hundreds of black municipal workers whose 1968 walkout became a rallying cry of the Poor People’s Campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In 1968, 40% of Memphis sanitation workers relied on welfare to survive. Today 52% of fast food workers are forced to access benefits just to get by. 50 years later, we are still struggling, and we are still fighting.
As we honor the legacy of the Memphis strikers we commit ourselves to organizing forward by participating in six weeks of direct action and nonviolent civil disobedience beginning Mother’s Day as part of the new Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, uniting two of the nation’s most powerful social movements in a common fight for strong unions to lift people of all races out of poverty, break the chains of racism, challenge the morality of the military economy and address the environmental destruction that affects us all.

We’re releasing a report titled Democracy in Planning: Enhancing democratic participation in San Diego’s Community Planning Groups, and we’re throwing a party to celebrate. Join us on the rooftop of our office building for a fun afternoon of good conversations, good people, and good beer!
About the Report: Public participation is a cornerstone of city planning and a pillar of democracy. Everyone should have a voice in how decisions are made, especially in local government.
Unfortunately, not all voices have equal access to participate in community planning groups (CPGs). The structure of CPGs has allowed certain voices to become amplified, while excluding others. Barriers undermine the purpose of CPGs to collect diverse and representative public input and to advance democratic participation.
1 Billion Rising Solidarity for Homeless Women and Girls!
Monday, February 12, Noon
Fault Line Park
1429 Island Avenue
For More Information
Hosted by San Diego Housing Emergency Alliance
One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
OBR 2018 continues to sustain the theme of “Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women” as neo-liberal policies and rapacious capitalism have become the engine of most governments, bringing profound consequences for the long-suffering working class and marginalized sectors. In San Diego, the highest number of reported Sexual Assaults is in East Village, Ground Zero for our Housing Disaster and increase in Homelessness. This is no coincidence — homeless women and girls are highly vulnerable.
JOIN US to stand in Solidarity with our Homeless sisters and call attention to: Why women are homeless (escaping domestic violence, poverty, low wages, disability- some of which may be related to DV); the lack of safety in the MegaTent Shelters for women; the criminalization of homelessness; the lack of investment in affordable housing; and how the affordable housing/homelessness disaster and the criminalization of homelessness impacts and endangers women and makes them more vulnerable to male violence. E.g., impounding their RVs and vehicles so they no longer have a safe place to stay.

Our Dreams Live
Friday, February 16, 5pm
Bread and Salt
1955 Julian Avenue (Barrio Logan)
For More Information
We would like to invite family, friends, supporters, and allies to a night filled with fun, food & drinks (with donations), music and of course art. But Our Dreams Live is more than a benefit art show. It is a celebration of our communities and of our resiliency and adaptability in the face of continuous hardship. It is a celebration of our experiences as immigrants, DACA recipients, and Dreamers. We hope that you will join us as we fight for dignity, respect, and our rights as human beings.
Under the current political circumstances, it has never been more dire that we get our reality as a border town recognized. There is a constant fear and anxiety brought about by ICE and militarization of our borders. The fear of deportation. The lack of stability and living in a perpetual state of limbo can be and is emotionally, mentally and physically taxing. That is why we need our stories heard. Our narratives as the most vulnerable victims of increased border security need to be a part of the dialogue as legislators craft policy that directly impacts our lives. Proceeds from the show will go towards local advocacy for a Clean Dream Act as well as sending San Diego border Dreamers to D.C to have our voices heard and inserted into policy conversations. We need our realities to be acknowledged and our lives to be respected. Because it is not a piece a paper that gives us value; it is the dignity of our characters, the morality of our actions and our commitment to our communities and loved ones that give us value. We are the American Dream, and we will forever continue to fight for our dreams.
So please join us in celebrating and fundraising. Join us and be on the right side of history. We are looking forward to seeing you all there.
