I have three favors to ask today.
The time has come to make some decisions if you haven’t already. We’d like you to vote, no matter what your preferences are. Of course, we have opinions on candidates/issues and would like to share them with readers. But unless you’ve come directly to us, you won’t get the opportunity to hear those views.
The powers that be at Facebook have decided we might be part of a Russian plot, so a twenty dollar promotion for a San Diego Free Press voter guide has been rejected. The copy for this post already ran for a seven-day period earlier in May. We were merely attempting to renew for three days leading up to the weekend.
To be fair, they’ll take our money after we complete a vetting process. Unfortunately, the June 5th primary will be long gone by the time our status is reviewed since it involves snail mail. Favor #1 is, please “share” this post.
So let’s talk about failing to make the effort to cast your ballot by June 5. Not voting means you approve of the status quo, even more so than people who actually vote for entrenched reactionary incumbents. Not voting means you’re dumb enough to think not participating is some kind of protest. It’s true many of the choices offered on the ballot are less than ideal. It’s true both political parties are run by people more concerned about money than principles.
It’s also true if everybody voted this country’s policies would be a lot closer to the values of (most of) its people. That’s why those with the most privilege are the least concerned about voter turnout. Some of our nation’s 1 percenters spend money to make it more difficult to actually vote. Others spend money to create the impression it’s a waste of time. Others have fouled the discourse so much that independent outlets are prevented from promoting their views.
If you marched in protest of Trump’s bs and don’t vote, you’ve more than canceled out any good karma you may have received.
As of May 31st, approximately 25% of the mail-in ballots for the City of San Diego have been received by the Registrar of Voters, according to the Political Data, Inc. Absentee Vote Tracker.
Both Democrats (2%) and Republicans (4%) are returning their ballots at a rate higher than the percentage of those mailed to each group. Not voting in proportion to their group’s size in the early balloting are people saying they had No Party Preference (-5%), people 18-34 (-9%), people 35-49 (-7%), and Latinos (-8%).
Up in the 49th Congressional District, Democrats are ahead in ballots cast by 6%. In the 50th, Republicans are ahead by 6%.
It ain’t over until it’s over. There’s no way of knowing how those mail-in voters actually voted and there’s no way of knowing what the final turnout will be. Favor # 2 is to ask you to make sure you vote. Just get it done.
Finally, Favor #3 is to make sure everybody you know votes. Don’t assume. Ask them to vote.
Don’t know who to vote for? Here’s selection of voter guides you may find useful:

When we vote, we win. Every time.
Much of this week’s calendar is concerned with Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts. I’m sure I missed a bunch, so if you have a candidate or cause you want to support, give them a shout. They’ll be thrilled to hear from you.
For those of you who may feel a bit shy about asking strangers to vote, I offer up An Introvert’s Guide to Political Canvassing (h/t Carol Kim).
Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Call to Action if Trump Fires Mueller
March for Truth—an organization that is working with dozens of advocacy groups to organize rapid response protests has partnered with MoveOn.org, Public Citizen, Indivisible and many others to prepare emergency ‘Nobody is Above the Law‘ rallies that will happen directly following the firing of the special counsel should it occur. There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.
By firing Mueller or Rosenstein, the president would trigger a full-fledged constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The hours following the firing will determine whether he is proved right.
