As we head into the midterm elections, the administration’s “Make America White Again” agenda is kicking into high gear.
The zero-tolerance program at the border, which had zero intention of ever showing any compassion to children separated from their families has 497 of migrant kids *still* in custody, according to a just-filed government update. Parents of 322 of those kids have already been deported; 22 of the still-separated kids are under 5 years old.
The Trump administration and their allies hoped to defuse citizen outrage over their cruel policies by publicizing and politicizing the death of a Mollie Tibbets, a young woman from Kansas. The man charged with her murder was, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, not a legal resident, although his employer –a prominent Republican businessman– initially denied the claim.
Her family pushed back against administration attempts to use the murder to denigrate those who were speaking up on behalf of immigrants in detention. During her funeral, Tibbetts’ father made it their position clear.
“But we need to turn toward life – Mollie’s life – because Mollie’s nobody’s victim. Mollie’s my hero.” He continued his support for the Hispanic community and rebuked the negative comments made by others by stating; “The Hispanic community are Iowans. They have the same values as Iowans. As far as I’m concerned, they’re Iowans with better food.”
Additional stories of abuse of detainees continue to surface. From the Associated Press:
Three minors from El Salvador separated from their parents after crossing the U.S. border were sexually abused in shelters in Arizona, Salvadoran officials said Thursday.
Liduvina Magarin, deputy foreign relations minister for Salvadorans overseas, said authorities had received reports of the abuse of the children ages 12 to 17 by workers at unnamed shelters.
“They are sexual violations, sexual abuses, that is what this is about,” Magarin told journalists.
Detainees being held at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, Washington, are participating in a hunger strike, part of a national protest. The prison strike, launched by prisoners in South Carolina in response to the riot in the state’s Lee Correctional Institution in which seven prisoners lost their lives, began August 21, on the anniversary of the death of incarcerated activist George Jackson and has spread nationally.
Women in detention who’ve tried to join the hunger strike have been told they will be moved to a different facility, away from their children. ICE has a history of transferring hunger strikers to other facilities. ICE ain’t nice, follks.
Earlier this week, the Washington Post quoted a 40-year-old man named Juan — he didn’t want his last name used for fear of being targeted — who has a birth certificate stating he was born in the Texas border city of Brownsville. He served his country for three years in the U.S. Army, then was a cadet in the Border Patrol, and now works as a Texas state prison guard. But when he applied to renew his passport this year, the State Department responded with a letter saying it didn’t believe he was a citizen.
Some of the people who have been denied passports have later even been jailed and placed into deportation proceedings, according to the Post.
The stunning report reveals the depths to which the administration will sink in its campaign against immigrants — or even just people it thinks might be immigrants. Although the government is currently denying the existence of a new policy, the Washington Post story has encouraged hundreds of people to come forward with similar accounts. Basically, if you are a brown-skinned person born along the southern US border, your citizenship is in question.
Additional reports are surfacing about the Bank of America’s actions towards immigrants. The Sacramento Bee‘s reporting this week included statements from Paulina Gonzalez, executive director of the California Reinvestment Coalition, who said these actions were the latest form of harassment aimed at immigrant communities.
“Fear is gripping these communities,” Gonzalez said. “It’s like walking into a grocery store to buy milk and being asked for your citizenship at checkout—banking is one of the core aspects of daily life in this country. To be faced with this question in order to do banking seems as un-American as you can get.”
Gonzalez’s coalition has now launched a petition, “Tell Bank of America: Stand with immigrants,” that accuses the bank of abetting the Trump Administration’s crackdown on immigrants, and calls on the bank to “protect immigrants’ civil rights and stop collecting information about the citizenship status of its customers.” The petition has received more than 61,000 signatures since Aug. 29.
The Department of Homeland Security dismissed one of its senior policy analysts after a reporter with the Atlantic Magazine revealed Ian M. Smith’s involvement with email threads planning events that featured alt-right figureheads.
In another thread, Smith said he was sorry he missed an event hosted by Spencer’s National Policy Institute. When reached for comment by the Atlantic, Spencer said he didn’t recall meeting the DHS aide.
Responding to one 2015 email that included the term “judenfrei,” the German word for “free of Jews” as used by Nazis to describe areas where Jews had been killed, Smith remarked that he was planning on socializing with a former neo-Nazi leader.
“I was planning to hit the bar during the dinner hours and talk to people like Matt Parrot, etc,” Smith wrote, referencing the former spokesman of the now-defunct Traditionalist Worker’s Party, a neo-Nazi group that splintered after leader Matthew Heimbach had an affair with Parrot’s wife.
Lest anybody think this is all unconnected or a coincidence, I invite them to read Brooke Binkowski’s The Roots of United States Immigration Policy.
The racism has been there all along. Donald Trump and his cohorts have just brought it out of the shadows.

Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

In late July, San Diego’s oldest collective, Mother Earth, was raided and charges were levied against our beloved Kim and one other person, Robert. Even though the collective was closed and there was no activity, the NTF‘S Team 9 raided and destroyed furniture, equipment, took a small amount of medicine and robbed them of 500 dollars.
We fully expect to win in court because there is a collective defense still valid until January. For this reason, Kim has filed a dumur motion (to dismiss), the motion will be argued on September 4th.
Please come to court and show your support!
San Diego Chapter #91 Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, September 4, 7pm
2877 Governor Drive
For More Information
Hosted by San Diego Veterans for Peace
We are a concerned group of patriotic veterans who feel compelled to speak out at this crucial time in our country’s history. While members of the American uniformed services, we were duty-bound and did not ask questions concerning our mission. Now, as discharged veterans and private citizens, we feel duty-bound to demand answers concerning the mission of our current service members, and to ensure that the sacrifices of American soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen are not taken lightly nor expended on frivolous endeavors.
As veterans with a range of experience and of military service, we act together to help educate our community about the American military culture and concerns. It is without a doubt that our activism stems from a deep love of our country, but also with a connection to humanity. It is from this background that we have all come together in the San Diego area to join in one clear voice to work toward a world of peace and justice. We will continue our commitment toward security, national and global, always using nonviolent means.

September 5th Rally for the DREAM
Wednesday, September 5, 6pm
Waterfront Park
1600 Pacific Highway
For More Information
Hosted by San Diego Border Dreamers
September 5th, 2018 will mark one year since the attempted termination of DACA and Congress has yet to provide permanent protection from deportation and a path to citizenship for the millions who live and contribute to this country. We are demanding that the White House, Trump and Congress keep their word and help mend the problem they created.
We need a permanent resolution in the form of a Clean DREAM Act, which will protect millions of hard-working undocumented peoples in this country and their families. We will not exchange our safety and futures for additional funds to further bolster this countries deportation machine. We will not trade our communities well being for a wall or additional agents for ICE or CBP; so that even more children can be ripped from their parents. It has been one year things have only gotten worse. We, the undocumented community and our allies will no longer tolerate negligence from this government.
Congress needs to do their job and provide a permanent solution and a pathway to citizenship for our sisters and brothers. We are willing to do whatever it takes to fight for the dignity, respect and human rights of the undocumented community. Join us on the one year anniversary of the attempted termination of DACA at Waterfront Park to remind Congress that they need to do their job and work to provide a permanent solution for millions of people in this country whose lives are in a state of uncertainty.

Border Angels Movie Night – “Who is Dayani Cristal?”
Thursday, September 6, 5:30pm
Sherman Heights Community Center Ballroom
2258 Island Avenue
For More Information
Hosted by BORDER ANGELS
Suggested $5 donation. $1 refreshments will be available!
SYNOPSIS: Deep in the sun-blistered Sonora Desert beneath a cicada tree, Arizona border police discover a decomposing male body. Lifting a tattered t-shirt, they expose a tattoo that reads “Dayani Cristal.” Who is this person? What brought him here? How did he die? And who — or what — is Dayani Cristal?
Following a team of dedicated staff from the Pima County Morgue in Arizona, director Marc Silver seeks to answer these questions and give this anonymous man an identity. As the forensic investigation unfolds, Mexican actor and activist Gael Garcia Bernal retraces this man’s steps along the migrant trail in Central America. In an effort to understand what it must have felt like to make this final journey, he embeds himself among migrant travelers on their own mission to cross the border. He experiences first-hand the dangers they face and learns of their motivations, hopes and fears. As we travel north, these voices from the other side of the border wall give us a rare insight into the human stories which are so often ignored in the immigration debate.
Who Is Dayani Cristal? tells the story of a migrant who found himself in the deadly stretch of desert known as “the corridor of death” and shows how one life becomes testimony to the tragic results of the U.S. war on immigration. As the real-life drama unfolds we see this John Doe, denied an identity at his point of death, become a living and breathing human being with an important life story.

The community of Fallbrook has united to oppose the proposed detention camp for immigrants & refugees in Camp Pendleton. For the time being, the plan did not move forward, but the risk is still present and other military bases in Texas have been designated to detain families who deserve due process, not detention.
To continue reinforcing our commitment to defend migrants we invite you to a community forum about the realities of the policies that threaten migrant communities, our democracy and our values.
Attorney Monika Langarica (Immigration Justice Project) will present on the legal history of detention.
Merely Ramirez (Otay Detention Resistance) will present on the refugee led struggle to defend detainees in Otay.

There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.

I would like to thank the San Diego Veterans for Peace for speaking out against the ridiculous nature of their missions in mostly Arab counties, expensive lost of young lives for 1000 yards of gain in the desert over the course of their year and a half of duty? ….or maybe that is the point? population control? DON’T JOIN THE MILITARY, DON’T BELIEVE THE PROPAGANDA or PROMISES of the unhappy paid employees of the military who recruit you… war is a futile exercise, just say no… there must be a better way to pay for college?
