With more than two dozen canvassing efforts planned for the coming days, Nathan Fletcher, Tommy Hough, Monica Montgomery, Dr. Jen Campbell, Ammar Campa-Najjar, Mike Levin, Todd Gloria, Chris Ward, Dr. Akilah Weber, Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, Mona Rios, Jose Rodriguez, Cori Schumacher, Tasha Boerner Horvath, James Elia, and Sunday Gover all want a little help from their friends with talking to voters throughout San Diego. And if you read through the listings below, you’ll find there’s also a celebrity coming to town to knock on doors.
Getting out the vote is serious business in San Diego this year. There’s still time to join campaigns. If you’re not able, be sure to be encouraging should they knock on your door. Contacting voters is the absolute best way to win an election and this level of pre-election activity is unprecedented in my experience.
I’ve been covering elections in San Diego for the last half dozen years, and I’ve never seen anything close to this kind of enthusiasm for getting out the vote from Democrats. I’ve also been producing an activist events calendar since before the 2016 election, and have never seen so many events crammed into a 10 day period. (For stats geeks who are into this kind of stuff, a typical calendar runs about 4000 words; this one tops 5700 words.)
Because this calendar is so long, I’m keeping this week’s intro short and sweet. I’ve gotta say, this leaves me feeling very hopeful.
Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.
Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Police Brutality is still very much present in our communities of color. Tasha Williamson( lead organizer in the #justice4EarlMcNeil case) and Bishop Bowser are both members of Community Assistance Support Team (CAST), have worked consistently in our community on issues surrounding law Enforcement and their unjust was of treating and killing people of color in our communities. Join us this day as they host our next RJC meeting and help us gain more insight on Earl’s case and other issues that affect our people of color in San Diego.
Tragedies with questionable circumstances involving police aren’t common, but they’re also not rare. It’s long been obvious that the best possible response from police agencies and the elected leaders who oversee them is to release all relevant information as soon as it is available — not to try to manage controversies. If autopsies or video from body cams or dash cams reflect poorly on officers’ conduct, delaying the release of the information won’t lessen its sting; it will only add to problems by creating or confirming the impression of a cover-up.
Yet in the tragic case of Earl McNeil, those lessons are being ignored by officials in National City. The 40-year-old ended up dead after being arrested on May 26 outside the city’s police station. The officers who came outside to speak with McNeil after he called a dispatcher said he was talking irrationally and appeared agitated, then became combative when they attempted to detain him. He was placed in a stiff nylon blanket restraint known as the Wrap and later suffered what police called “medical distress” while being examined by paramedics at the county jail. He was taken to a hospital, where he died June 11 after being taken off life support.

September – we look at WAR REDEFINED as part of Peace Week San Diego 2018. The capstone of the PBS series Women, War & Peace, War Redefined challenges the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain through incisive interviews with leading thinkers, Secretaries of State and seasoned survivors of war and peace-making.
Their experiences reveal how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualty rates. Simultaneously, they describe how women are emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict.
War Redefined reframes our understanding of modern warfare through probing conversations with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Madeleine Albright; Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee; Bosnian war crimes investigator Fadila Memisevic; Zainab Salbi, Founder of Women for Women International; globalization expert Moisés Naím; and Cynthia Enloe of Clark University, among others. The event is FREE and open to the public!
In the author’s own words, Radicals in the Barrio, “is an attempt to bring into focus the rich and deeply interwoven history to Mexican working-class people in the hardscrabble labor and civil rights struggles of the early 20th century. The invisibility of Mexicans in the canon of early labor and civil rights history continues to the present, where we see the suppression of the voices, narratives, and experiences of Mexican and Mexican-descendent people in the discourse of immigration politics. The book is an attempt to bring some of this history into the foreground.”
Please join us to celebrate this groundbreaking text and continue the work to center Raza voices, and resist the silencing of our histories!

We have roughly 8 weeks to help assure this outcome. Let’s get together for one more conversation about what options we each have to add to one final pre-election thrust. There are ways to contribute that don’t take a great deal of time and don’t put you in a position of having to talk with strangers.
We’re working on getting a special guest speaker and we’ll have experts who will share strategies to put Ammar over the top. As usual, there will be food and beverages. I’m sure that by the end of our meeting we’ll have the roadmap to success.

Call to Action if Trump Fires Mueller
March for Truth—an organization that is working with dozens of advocacy groups to organize rapid response protests has partnered with MoveOn.org, Public Citizen, Indivisible and many others to prepare emergency ‘Nobody is Above the Law‘ rallies that will happen directly following the firing of the special counsel should it occur. There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.
By firing Mueller or Rosenstein, the president would trigger a full-fledged constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The hours following the firing will determine whether he is proved right.

Join the ACLU’s People Power: People Power is, at its core, a grassroots member-mobilization project. Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers will build local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity.
